tire shopping!

Hey all, I'm currently in the market for new tires as my current ones are wearing down which are 245 75 17 BF Goodrich all-terrains. They served me well but I need something that does better in muddy conditions. My current rig is a JKU, stock suspension but I do plan on leveling it out with the Teraflex kit once I decide on a tire. I don't rock crawl at all and don't intend to. I mostly do trail runs and want a happy medium between my current tire and a mudder. I'd also like to size up a bit. Thoughts and recommendations welcome and thanks in advance.

FYI, Discount Tire Direct has $100 off $400 via eBay (check slickdeals.net front page for code). I priced a set of 255/75R17 Duratracs at $676 shipped, then called my local Discount Tire and negotiated a set of 4 for $666 out the door (mounted/balanced). Worth looking into, if they carry the tire you want. :)

This forum is awesome, thanks guys! I plan on doing the leveling kit and tires around April/May so I certainly have some time to do my homework.

Anyone have any experience with the Cooper Discoverer STT or Cooper Discoverer S/T ?
I have stock springs for now, tow regularly, and plan to get Synergy 1" springs.

The STT is really my favorite tire and I'd be running them if they came in a 255/80-17. But they don't.
They come in other 33 sizes, like a 285, but that would rub the LCAs with stock wheels. So then I'd need new wheels and that would mean a bigger lift. Which I don't need...
The ST-Max isn't as good in the mud as the STT. But the STT isn't as good as the Maxx in the snow or on the street.
Pick your poison.

The ST is a very good AT and has proven itself in worldwide travel. They come in a wide variety of sizes, are very good in snow and on the street, just not quite as good in mud as the ST-Maxx. The Maxx is a tire that was created to fill the void between the STT and ST. Toyo offers a range of tires that compare very well to the Coopers but usually cost more; I've run the Toyos and found they wear out a bit faster but are excellent performers.

BTW, I've seen the Duratracs rip sidewalls on the trail and I've never been tempted to use them. I ran the Goodyear MT-Kevlars though and found them to be decent ATs, not great in clay-based mud, pretty good in snow, great on the street.

Be advised that you will loose your smooth ride if you go with the ST MAXX. AWESOME TIRE in everything other than ride quality. I had them and they have the stiffest sidewall I have experience in a tire. Way stiffer than my current BFG E load AT KO. Some sizes have an inherent right pull too. the 285 is one of them. The tire is not all rainbows and baby farts like some would have you believe. They wear like iron, are tough as Iron and ride like Iron. On the other side of the coin, is the duratrac, ride is great, does not wear near as long as the ST MAXX, and the sidewalls are weak in all load ranges. I have seen many duratracs blow their sidewalls.

I loved everything about my maxx except for the ride. It was filling jarring even at 30 psi. Whereas my KO, at 30-35 psi ride smooth and provide 90 percent of the grip of the maxx. If you need Mud traction, Look at the KM2. They have the same ride quality of the KO as they use essentially the same sidewall composition, but have much more mud grip while not giving up to much on the on road manners.

Although I don't drive a Jeep I've had a fantastic run with Durartacs.
The new Toyo R/T look good if your looking for an aggressive type AT.

Just got the ST's for a great deal - so far they have been great in all the snow we are having in the Northeast. 265 75 16 on 16 x 8 Mambas - very beefy tread & C load so not to heavy. Compared to the 265 75 16 Cooper ATP's I was running, the ST's are slightly skinnier & a bit taller.

A nice hum on road at speed, they will get louder as all aggressive tires do but so far nice & quiet.

I've narrowed it down to:

Goodyear Duratrax - 285/70/17
Cooper ST MAXX - 255/80/17
Cooper STT - 285/70/17

I plan on installing that Teraflex leveling kit and will do the tires after. These above options should work on my factory 17s with the leveling kit, correct? Sorry for the dumb questions as this is my first time tire shopping. I was lucky to have a new set of KOs on my JKU when I bought it.
