Tires: When is it time to replace them?

I'd have to say I feel the opposite about the FC-II. I think they look like crap.

I did some looking and reading about the treadwrights. The price is great and the construction checks out good, but I have read about them taking a whole lot of weight to balance and most tire shops won't touch them. If it was strictly a wheeler, I wouldn't mind, but I don't think I'll go that route on a DD.

Redline (tire guru) has been studying the FC-II tires for a while now. You may want to check out some of his research before buying. That said, he gave me the run down on these tires while I was in Hollister, and I am impressed. They will be the next set of tires to go on my cruiser.

Deep tread, large voids for an A/T tire, advanced siping pattern and sturdy sidewall with good flex. Redline's got me sold on them, thanks to his thourough and unbiased review. Here is the thread on these tires.

Redline did a great job reviewing those tires. Just playing devil's advocate here, but you can get abnormally good or bad tires, and this could be either.

I'm getting a smoking good deal on a set of Kevlar M/Ts though.

F-C II treads

Not to contradict, but to clarify about the F-C II sidewalls...

I do like the ******** Cepek F-C II tread very much, although I can’t give a strong testimony regarding sidewall strength. I’ve has zero problems with the sidewalls thus far, but they are flexible (I like that) and my sense is that they are simply ‘average’ or ‘typical’ 2-ply sidewalls, like most other load-range-D tires with 2-ply sidewall. Surely not as rugged or stiff as something like a Toyo MT, which is generally good thing unless one needs this that type of performance.

As well all know the sidewall is the most vulnerable part of they tire, regardless of the construction. I saw a buddy put a couple nice gashes in the sidewall of a MT/R Kevlar this year.

To comment on the original question, 4/32" is very low tread in my opinion. I would prefer to not run tires below 6-8/32". I just had to run the tires on my wife's VW TDI down to 2/32" (I will blog about this later) to get the prorated warranty money out of them, and I hated running the low tread. They had deeper tread (4-5/32&#8221 this past winter and it just wasn't enough.

For anything other than perfectly clean, dry pavement, I would replace your 4/32” tires as soon as you can afford it. The link below to a Tire Rack video about tread depth and stopping distance should help convince folks that running low tread might not be the wisest, safest thing.

This is the first 4x4 I have owned long enough to have to replace the tires on. Right now, I have ~4/32s left on my ProComp MTs and I'm wondering if they are ok to run to AR for the Fall Foliage trip and back. I'm not worried about them on the road, I'm more worried about them off-road. They aren't rashed up or anything like that, but it is hard to swallow spending ~$900 on tires that may not be used up yet.

Got my MTR Kevlars on this evening. Out the door, mounted and balanced with road hazard was $847.50. They are sooooooo quiet and smooth. It was like driving on pillows. You could call me a happy guy.

EDIT: And I also get an $80 mail in rebate for them. So I guess that makes it $767.50!
