People always forget to mention that resale on a diesel is MUCH higher and often ofsets the initial purchase price or more. Overall I dont think maintenance is much more expensive if DIY.
The one big expense that shocked me when moving to big diesel trucks was tires. I regularly got 60k miles out of AT tires on my half tons. I have yet to get more than 30k out of a set on a diesel and I usually run 37s vs 35s on the diesels so tires are more than 2x as much.
But diesels are more fun to drive, easier to modify for heavy off road use and take a beating much better than a half ton. I say go big or go home if you have the cash
