Total noob question about series trucks.

Why is the grill section called the breakfast? I can't find the answer to that one anywhere.

i think on some models, you could fold the grate down and use it as a bbq.

They might have completely removed it as an aftermarket "mod"

That rings a bell, at least. Might not be 100% correct.

As I remember it, a lot of enthusiasts were less than enthused when
the series III came out with a plastic grille instead of the metal one
that the former IIA had. They effectively lost their ability to use it
for cooking.

I read somewhere that is how it got its name, but it also said that since they are galvy you would be crazy to use it for that - something about not being good for long term health.

Ah. That makes since, although calling a grill with a duel meaning makes even better since but what fun is that?:coffeedrink:

It was called that because folks on remote expeditions would use the grill as a true grill, ... but there is zinc poisoning to contend with.

I don't think there was too much a risk unless they made every meal on it for many years.

Anyhoo, that is the story.

I think you may have a series truck coming into your near future?

I can see the you have mystical powers Dendy!

Yes I am going to pick up my new baby on Monday and I am psyched!

Actually I'm in your town this weekend finishing a project at Meharry Medical College but I'll be working all day Saturday hopefully just the morning on Sunday. Anything I shouldn't miss?

If you get a chance ... go to OpryLand Hotel and walk through the inside Atriums. Amazing. Just a nice pleasant experience and an awesome feat. (largest inside atrium, complete with waterfalls, gondola rides, etc.)

Lots of history in that place. If you like barbecue, go to Jack's Barbecue here:

416 Broadway, Nashville, TN - (615) 254-5715

Enjoy your stay. Dale is a very dear friend and I have kept up with your progress through him.

You'll enjoy the Series!

I've also heard that they are called a breakfast because the early rovers, with the headlights in the middle, looked like two eggs with a smile of bacon!

....and the center section does kind of look like toast....:coffeedrink:

Thanks for the tips Dendy, I don't thing I'll get off the job site this trip as it's going very slow. At least I've got the pickup of my IIa to look forward too.

Think of it as a joke gone wild.

Before the mid late 1990's no one every heard of the term being used for the radiator bulkhead. About that time there was a long thread on the LRO mail list that started with a couple people pulling others legs about Australians cooking on a toxic zinc radiator grille over a fire in the outbacks & yes I think someone even mentioned that the bulkhead looked like bacon & eggs. As I recall they said the term was popular Aussie outback slang.

Some folks who should have known better convinced the newbies & coiler folks who were lucky to identify a Series truck that the radiator bulkhead is called a breakfast. It quickly caught on as a term that showed you were in the know about Series Land Rovers and spread by word of mouth & net contact from the people who read the description. I don't know anyone in the UK who called it a breakfast before that thread. You will never find it in Land Rover literature nor in manuals or parts books.

So more and more people convince other people that breakfast is the correct "in" term for the radiator bulkhead. It is totally silly and I suspect there is a small group of Canadians who still crack up every time they hear someone calling the bulkhead a breakfast.

Personally I think its kinds of sad that a joke took root and is growing on its own into a fully believed urban legend. I just hope someone doesn't take it seriously enough to grill food off the grille and eat it. "Here, hold my beer and I'll show you how real Land Rover owners grill meat"

:wings: Ah, the good old days. I'm somewhat saddened that our PTO powered wild animal shredder never made urban folklore list. That thread went on quite a while. LOL

I think my all time favorite smiley thread took place in the earlyish '90's (I think) when a newbie asked what a diff locker was and people got carried away discussing the locker as a place to store things and what one stored in a locker. Which was usually recovery gear which is why locker diffs were good to have out in the rough trail.

The Davy Jones locker, AKA DJ locker was offered as the best brand for someone who frequently went deep wading in their Land Rover and how it was better for that application than an ARB locker. :)

This was the environment that spawned the term breakfast as an "IN" name for the radiator bulkhead.
