BigDave,

Great trip report. Was this last weekend (Aug 23ish)?

I believe I may have saw you loading the Cherokee on the back of a trailer near St. Elmo last Sunday but you mentioned parking in Buena Vista.

A few buddies and I fished at Spring Creek Reservoir and Mirror Lake (man, the fish were biting like crazy at both lakes). We were up their Friday through Sunday. We did Tin Cup with plans of hitting Grizzly Lake but a Blazer in our group barber poled his rear driveshaft on Old Tin Cup and we ended up winching and pulling him to the summit of Tin Cup pass where he could make it the rest of the way home with the FWD. There was a big blue 70’s Chevy truck (mine), blue Dodge Ramcharger, and a white 70’s Blazer in our group.

Awesome pictures you got! That Emerald Lake looks like a must see on our next trip.

We started out on the 22nd, made it into the Tincup area on the 25th, so we probably got there right after you left. We saw very few other 4x4's the entire time, mostly dirt bikes and ATV's.

I am looking to do a trip from Aspen to Telluride via crested butte on Mtn passes. I have a lifted Fleetwood cobalt popup. Can anyone let me know if I can make some of these passes' switchbacks? Will I need something more than a regular hitch setup for more articulation?

Thanks,

Great pics!

do you find that the signs are accurate regarding the need for the short narrow wheel base vehicles? I did some roads out there and saw some similar signs, but never encountered anything super technical. obviously you shouldnt take a bus up there....but I dont see why a longer wheelbase like a pickup truck wouldnt work on what i've seen

was your experience different?

My ZJ sits about 107" in WB, and never even came close to having an issue. My crew-cab short box F250 could've made it through all the trails we did, but if we encountered oncoming traffic on a narrow road it could become a major pain.

Nice trip! Looks like a blast.

It REALLY makes me miss living in CO! There are almost no trails in UT at all. Other than Moab we are pretty well shot out of luck for good trails. sigh...

As for the comments just above, I have seen a lot of trails that are too short for a ZJ to go around the corner without doing a three point turn. One trail I was on a fellow went down in a ford truck with a long box, and he took forever trying to make the corner. No idea what he thought he was doing on there. We finally gave up on him and went around him on the inside.

Thanks for pointing me towards you photos BigDaveZJ
