Towing trailer with 04' Jeep TJ Rubi

I'm looking at getting a trailer to tow behind my jeep. I haven't towed a trailer before so this is a new thing for me. My soon to be wife and I are looking at getting more into the overland expo type stuff and she is wanting something with a RTT and I'm looking to be able to carrying equipment easily instead of jamming it into the back of the jeep.

I guess my question is:
Does anyone tow a expedition trailer with their TJ.. What type of weight do I need to stick around. Any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated!

Dinoot.com. If you can fashion something together yourself then this is the king. Cheap in comparison and highly customizable. Ive had mine for a year and love it!

I don't have a TJ but the JK is not that much different when talking about trailers. Matter of fact, your wheelbase is longer than mine. Also, assuming you have the 6 cylinder both of our motors are around 200hp. I would suggest you use a trailer that is around 600-700# empty and 1,500# or less loaded. The most important thing is to have brakes and have them set properly. The trailer is ~50% the weight of the Jeep and the combination of the short wheel base lets the trailer push the jeep if trailer brakes are not used; this is especially bad in rain or snow.

I pulled my trailer from AZ to WY with around 1500#, I could take a headwind or a hill but not both at the same time without slowing down drastically.

I agree. 1500# max loaded weight. Good brakes and an articulating hitch.

I've owned a 05 TJ Rubi and now own an 08 JK Rubi. You won't have any problems at all for any of the Expedition Trailers listed. In fact I would rather have the 4.0L I6 in my 08! You'll be completely fine up to the tow limit of 2,000lbs.

:sombrero: Just regear your '08 JKUR and you'll never even think about the legendary 4.0L--

There are some steep inclines getting into the parking garage at the mall :sombrero:

But seriously, I don't just stay in Ohio! Obviously the lighter the trailer, the better performance when towing, especially on hills.

A buddy borrowed a M105 to get some bushes at the Home Depot.
No problems towing with it! Handles just fine..............

Test drive a 3.6L JK and you will not want to take your 2011 or older Jeep home with you. I did not have any issues towing with my 2011 JKU with the sissy 3.8L, my 2012 3.6L JKU is a rocket ship in compairison and it gets better fuel milage. Driving the mountains of westen MD with 2k behind it and you didn't know they were there.

:sombrero: Buying new cars is what we've been doing for over 100yrs, so if you want a new jeep --GET ONE

They are really quite an improvement, but

Any jeep made in earlier years is quite a vehicle, if your trailer pulling is sluggish and still within the legal weight limits, you can regear your differential for a minimal cost compared to buying a new jeep ($$)-

By regearing my '08 JKUR I can tow on the freeway/up hills and off-road----like there's no trailer and all with good gas mileage-

The new jeeps are an improvement---like most new vehicle innovations, but there really is no reason the spend that kind of money, unless you're ready forit !!

Good luck
