Toyota Diesel V8!

Is the diesel coming to the US going to be hybrid only??? I'm still not sold on hybrids and would like a diesel sans electric motors and batteries.

I was also under the impression that you couldn't get ultra low sulphur diesel south of the border. Does that raise concerns for any of you that frequent Baja?

This Diesel aficionado is VERY happy to hear this news, and like others, hope it’s the first of new many Diesels.

As much as I look forward to the Tundra, I too would like to see the same or smaller Diesel in the Tacoma as I have no need for a second, large heavy-duty pickup. My hope is that a Diesel Tacoma might get highway economy close to 30-MPG with the right driver and set-up.

Yeah, I'm a non-beliver in hybrids, espescialy when current Diesel Drivetrains get AMAZING fuel economy withOUT all of the assosciated wiring/crap... If they make the Cruiser a diesel Hybrid, they will have officialy killed it IMO. What we need are solid axles, good old diesel's, and LESS electronic garbage to go wrong... Oh and cloth seats, part-time cases and power nothing would be awsome too...

But yeah, I want a small diesel!!!!!!!! From the factory ;)

Finally, a diesel Toyota!

I hope they make a smaller diesel and put it in a Tacoma.

That would be cool, but it's probably a long way away. Which could be good since I will drive my 07 into the ground before I buy something new.

I've been waiting for what seems like eons for a Toyota diesel in the States.
Go back to the early 80s. You could get an 84-85 4wd Hi Lux with the 2LT, or the 2wd with the 2L. The Camrys were available with the 2CT and 3CT through 86 I think. And the Tercels got the 2c and 3c non-turbos. So Toyota has brought diesels to the US, just not in the numbers you thought or models you wanted.

I get really frustrated with the MPG claims the car companies are touting these days. My 84 2CT Turbo Diesel Camry would get 38mpg no matter how hard you flogged it. We'd get up in the 46mpg range on the interstate holding 72-75mph on the cruise. So when I see an ad for the Ford Focus or whatever it is called getting 35 mpg I just laugh. In over 20 years there should have been some advances in automotive technology. Look at the differences in computer technology in the same amount of time.

At this point a factory D4D diesel option is about the only way Toyota would get me off the dime and looking at new Tacos. Otherwise, blah.

There was an article recently comparing the mpg of the 80's and today. And how for the most part, cars of the 80's got better mileage. While cars today have gained in size and weight; can you say, "Supersize Me?".

If I can remember where I read it from, I'll post up the link.
