Continuing on with preparation, a lenghty discussion regarding recovery points came up.

In a Series, jate rings aren't applicable so I have no idea where to put front and rear recovery points. I was thinking of a recovery hitch to attach at the trailer hitch in the back but are there better options?

Source a pair of stock front recovery rings. They work well and can be had semi-easily. Paddocks carries new ones and occasionally you can find them 2nd hand.

For the rear, you can add a tow hitch (I believe EVERY truck should have a tow hitch). Otherwise you could add a pindle hitch jaw or an aftermarket recovery ring. Any of these will work fine.

Can you put recovery eyes underneath the bumper/chassis connection? I always seem them above.

So really, just two eyes and one of these:

Pink Panthers had them on the front of the bumper. Don't think they can mount on the bottom.

I'll check to see if I can; want to keep the two corners free because I saw someone mount two jerry cans on top! Smart!

I wouldn't use one of those. You need a hitch shackle or similar. Those ball hitches can break during recovery operations and will go through a windshield like a cannonball.

The hitch receivers are such an awesome option for an out-of-the-box vehicle -- it's a shame there isn't really a viable, comparable option for the front (to the best of my somewhat limited knowledge, lol).

Put the jerry cans on the back door next to each other. Then paint the words "Gin" on one and "Tonic" on the other.

Doesn't matter. Most have holes for either position. Either way, much safer than an actual ball hitch. Heck, I'd use the receiver pin before a ball hitch.

Friendly reminder not to use a ball for recovery purposes. People have been killed by these.

I bought a recovery hitch for the back and still trying to find the D rings for the front. If I can't find a set, I found a drilled hole in the chassis that can be the recipient of a clevis shackle,

No, you are right. The correct answer is a JATE ring attached to the chassis, with a D shackle attaching the JATE ring to the tow strap.

I bought my JATE rings from Expedition Exchange, but they don't seem to carry them any more. You can buy a Britpart JATE ring ( http://www.britpart.com/Accessory.asp?pageref=4&AccessoryRef=2199 ) from 3 Brothers Classic Rovers ( www.3brothersclassicrovers.com ) in Ontario or order them directly from the UK at http://www.paddockspares.com/off-road/ropes-and-recovery/jate-rings.html , amongst many other places.

I may sound pedantic by saying this, but the FIRST modification you should make to your Land Rover before ever going off-road is proper recovery points, front and rear. In other words, you should order a JATE ring RIGHT NOW if you don't already have one ;-)
