Traveling with a dog

I have always had my dogs on a leash or line while in the wild. I have had 14 dogs during my life, starting when I was 5 years old, currently my Boxer is now 11 years old.

Dogs explore. They can find trouble. Out in our woods we have Copperheads, Water Moccasins, Rattle Snakes, as well as others that can just give you a nasty bite. They all bite dogs. We have black and brown bears, if they feel cornered, they can eat most dogs. Then, you always have Bubba who tries to drive 45 mph on a 20 mpg gravel road around some curve and thinks all dogs try to get his chickens.

I've known guys where his dog's attributes amplified his own sense of identity and masculinity. Like saying Davey Crocket would never have a dog on a leash.....well, they ain't Davey Crocket and this is the 21st Century and we have all kinds of restraints for our dogs to save them from all kinds of dangers.

For the world of dog & trucks, two suggestions:

Our Ram truck has the window and door lock switches mounted on the armrests. Our dog stays in the back seat area and loves to window ride...where he can occasionally step on the window switch or door lock buttons. I decided to address this by buying a sheet of plastic cardboard (source: Plastic Cardboard from Michaels Crafts) and cutting it to size over the entire armrest. This gives a flat surface, covers both the switches and grab handle area. The plastic panel is "stuck" to the armrest by use of self-adhesive Velcro squares. I then topped off the plastic panel with some 3M non-slip safety tape. All this avoids having my dear mutt opening the window or locking the door.

I then noted that his nails were starting to scratch up my window jam base. I applied a strip of light duty duct tape over the jam trim, then applied a strip of the 3M non-slip tape over the duct tape. This provides OZY a non-slip surface for his paws when he is window riding. The use of the duct tape is to make the very strong adhesive 3M non-slip tape easier to remove if I ever do. Clean the plastic with rubbing alcohol first for good adhesion.

We’ve had a lot of luck with ibuddy seat slings (link) and a solid car harness in case of a crash or to keep her from causing issues in a traffic stop etc.

The sling keeps them off the doors and stuff. We recently upgraded to a gunner kennel because even with a harness I don’t think the dog would do well in an accident. The gunner is snug by design (she can turn around and lay down) and I’m a bit worried about her comfort on long trips but I’ll play it by ear.
