We took an impromptu trip to explore the Salton Sea and surrounding areas southeast. Usually we just drive past it, but figured.. why not give it it's dues. We also visited Painted Canyon, Bombay Beach, Niland, Salvation Mtn, Slab City, Sonny Bono Wildlife Refuge and Truckhaven.

Also we were pleasantly surprised that another Expo member Suntinez let us tool around in her overland equipped Toyota Tundra with Flip Pac. It was quite the experience heading out in a uber comfy full fize pick up. More on that in the report.

We packed in a bit for the time we had and of course it was good times as always.

Nice report. Its been some time since I've cruised around those areas. Brings back memories.

Its a shame that the most polluted river in the world, the New River, flows into the Salton Sea.

Nice report Dave and as always good to get out with you two.

I found the SS to be starkly beautiful with a fascinating history. I guess when the Colorado river breaches for two years it makes a big puddle!

Its current state and future is a commentary on political, environmental, international and socio-economic issues. A complicated set of problems, but wouldn't it be cool if the powers that "be" could get it together and make this place healthy again? Water issues are so closely intertwined with the CA's evolution.

In some ways it reminds of me of the Owens Valley, except for that big puddle in the middle
