What did you use for the laptop mount. I read all about your GPS info. I would love to install this into my JKU Rubicon!

Built, not bought!
Just read all 40 pages. Amazying build dude. The attention to detail for both your rig and trailer are incredible. Can't wait to see more!!

More Spring maintenance, and the first trail run of the new year...

The rear Expedition One bumper took another beating this winter. It's getting close to the point where I'll need to un-bolt it and get it sandblasted / painted professionally. But for now, I thought I'd give the grinder / spray-can one last try. To get the maximum air possible, I plugged an electric air compressor into the truck's on-board air system (York compressor under the hood) as well - a grinder takes a lot of air. The combination of both, with the two air tanks on the roof rack, worked fairly well, and I was able to get at most of the outside rust. I also did a few rust patches on the front bumper, and will probably remove the roof rack this week -- it needs a lot of TLC, and the best way is to get it on the ground with a Dremel.

As I wrote in my blog post on The Road to Myself, the rear locker didn't make it through the winter... On the trail this past Saturday, the diff would snap loudly when the locker was activated and the axle was under load. This seems to be a known issue with JK Rubicons that are a few years old (mine is an early 2007 model). An enterprising owner has found a creative solution by using D60 shims on the locking mechanism, allowing it to engage completely as it should. This could be the way I go as well (if I can find anyone in Montreal willing to take apart a JK e-locker), or I could just upgrade the gears to 4.56s and go with ARB air lockers instead. We'll see how the new job goes. ;-)

Awesome Jeep.

What lap top mount are you using for your "command center"? I'm looking at getting the Ram Laptop mount system.

I looked at a ram mount for my jk as well but didn't like having a laptop and mount in front of the airbag on the passenger side.

Well if no one is riding shotgun, you'd probably be ok. Or if you're running a smaller computer like a netbook or running a tablet, you can position it more in the middle of the Jeep. You can find a different mount too than the big bulky looking mount that comes in the kit.

I thought I'd covered this, but only found one mention of it in another thread: http://www.expeditionportal.com/for...is-dust-and-rain-an-issue?p=259274#post259274

I used Sumo glue - a kind of foaming glue that is extremely tough - no hint of it letting go after years of use.

Mk JK e-Locker is toast.

A few weeks ago, on a mild trail, I found that my rear locker would SNAP and let go when under load. A quick search turned up several people with similar issues, all related to somekind of premature wear of the locker.

A friend is the 'gear guy' at the local dealer, so had him look at it, and yup, as I suspected, my rear locker is toast. And since my JK is a 2007, it doesn't have the lifetime powertrain warranty the 2008s have. :p

I kind of suspected my rear diff had an issue -- I change my engine oil twice a year, my diffs and trans once a year, and the t-case every 2 years. And every year, the rear diff oil was dark, compared to the front which was fairly clear. And it's not like I do a lot of millage -- the truck has 53k after 6 years! ;-)

So, now I have the choice between a new e-locker at $2200, which comes complete (cage, bearings and all), or an ARB air locker at $1200. The ARB means extra expense though because it's 35 spline, vs the JK Rubi which is 32. And I've already upgraded my axle shafts. :p Not to mention the ARB likes "clean" air, so my York isn't compatible -- I'd have to get an electric compressor for the locker. I found a nice under-seat mount for the dual ARB compressor though. ;-) And with a one-way valve, I could have twice the air for tools.

If time wasn't an issue (the Vermont Jeep Jamboree is in a month), I might have gone with an ARB locker, but decided to go with the OEM e-Locker instead. I'm hoping the one I had was a dud and I won't be in the same position again in 6 years. ;-) And while I'm at it, I'm upgrading the gears from 4.10 to 4.56. It's going to cost me an arm, and I don't have the same budget as I used to -- I like to work fewer hours now (like 10-15 a week) -- so this is somewhat outside of my non-existant budget. Still... Gotta be done. :-/

Overland Expo 2014

Looks like I'll be heading down to the Overland Expo in Flagstaff, AZ May 16-18th. The plan is to leave Montreal around April 1st, stop off to visit friends in NC and SC, then head across to AZ. I might drive to FL afterwards for some diving - not sure yet. Gotta be back in Montreal for the end of June.

The Cibie lights on the front bumper are about to fall off from the rust, so I just ordered some Baja Designs HID lights to replace them.

The rear bumper is in bad need of sandblasting, or complete replacement. Expedition One made a nice rear bumper, but the thin powder coat on it just doesn't stand a chance up here (and I don't even drive the truck much in winter).

In the next few weeks, I'll be packing up the trailer and doing a full oil change on the truck (engine, diffs, tcase, trans), along with removing a few skid plates (gas tank and front).
