The Cooper S or the 66' MG BGT (yes under that junk at the back there is a matching numbers early mk1 GT!!)

To be honest, I cant. I have a dillusional vision that i might rebuild it one day!!. I did drive it in there!! Maybe when this trailer is done (are they ever?)

As for the Cooper S... Ive owned since I was 19 (25 + years) so its like my 3rd lung now.

And thank you both for your comments, there are some great builds on here that inspire me. Trying tonlearn to alloy weld, not easy but getting there.

Christmas came early in Cheshire this year!!

My linear actuators arrived, much quicker than I thought they would. Really nice bits of kit and well built. Need to look into the size of box section I need to make the extending legs for the RTT platform, but that can wait for a bit.

Got a delivery of the GRP coated plywood on Friday, so measured up (and twice again!) before cutting them to the correct sizes. Also recieved all the alloy sections i am going to be using to create the box.

Marked them all up for drilling, just need to crack on with that task...think its approaching 100 holes to drill through the alloy and the panels.

Photo shows the sections marked up, hopefully the profile will show you how it will work. Very simular idea to horse box construction, if fact thats where i got the sections from, a pal of mine builds horseboxes for a living.

Next step after drilling is to glue and bolt 2 sides of the box together and rest it on the frame. Ive also started to bond a rubber strip round the frame to stop alloy/metal corrosion.

After posting a question on here a couple of weeks ago, i was given a couple of ideas on how to make a swing away bike rack. I normally carry them on the back of the D2, but now the trailer is in the frame, thats obviously not a option.

I dont need it to be able to carry a spare wheel, as the trailer now shares the same PCD as the D2 and matching wheel/tyre combo, but it does need to carry 3 bikes or the trasharoo if required. It should be quite strong so i may judge if it can carry a spare if ever required though.

You see it, mid stage as my Dad turned up and asked me to do a couple of jobs on his Defender, so didnt get as much time on it as planned. Its has a 40mm box section post mounted to the chassis and 2 x track rod rose joints used as the hinge. They are self lubricating and sealed, but i will fit boots to them. I chose these because they are capable of handling serious side loads as a track end and should cope with this load easily. The 40 x27.5 box has to be cut shorter and pieces added between the parrallel bars to form a oblong frame. On the back edge i will make a drop down shelf, the underside I will add some tangs to attach a gas rod to keep it open. As for the locking side of the 'gate', I need to work on the support it sits on. And butts up to, plus how to mount my plunge pin. The actual frame for the bike channels to bolt onto, is yet to be made up, but its a start.

Working progress, back of a napkin type stuff! But wanted to get this fabrication done before i cracked on with sides of the box.

finished the swing away part of the bike rack today. Just stuck a rubber buffer to the two faces of the catch post. Seems to work ok and is easily controlled by the ram. Ive cut the actual bars that carry the bike racks, just need to fab up the brackets that allow it pivot up and down. Not a big job and can wait. Need to clean off a bit of the red oxide primer, but im happy with it and seems very stable

Also drilled and fitted up 2 sides of the box. Used a glue/seal called Purflex and marine grade stainless fixings.

With the alloy section and the 3/4 grp panels, its increadibly stiff.

Ordered the floor so only built up 2 sides as that has to bolt to the alloy framing, then the whole lot bolts to the chassis. There is thin strip of bonded on rubber between the alloy and steel chassis frame.

The other 2 sides have access doors in them that i need to mark out and cut.

Cut the door out and bolted up the 3rd side. Lost count of how many m6 holes ive drilled!!

Mocked up where the light units will go, i will make boxes to protect them, mount the lights within and bolt the unit a whole to the tread plate

Not made that much progress this week, but done plenty of measuring up and thinking!! Got down to the garage tonight to draw up the side door openings and work out how much U section i need to dress them. Its amazing how much materials you use, just for the door and frame surrounds and I'm at nearly 20mtrs.

Having a think about the finish on the sides and thinking that i will look at vinyl wrap for the white panels, else it could end up looking a bit like a off-road rolling fridge! I could paint it to match the Discovery, but its Dark blue and it absorbs the heat, even in the UK's limited summer. When i take it further south (even within mainland Europe), I think the dark colour could make it a hot enviroment for engel to operate in, making it consume more battery power and toast anything else within it!! So looking at keeping the roof panel white, adding a couple of vents to allow through airflow and picking a less heat absorbing colour.

Really like the swing away carrier. I decided to go for the tow ball mounted rack on my homemade sankey.

Thanks for comments, I've looked at your great build for guidence previously.

I did seriously consider that method. But thought I'd have to unload the bikes (even if the rack tilted down) to get into the rear door. I am using the area behind the door for storing the awning sides and the RTT drop down sides around the ladder, it would be some of the first things I'd like to get to when reaching camp. If it's raining, dark or late (or all 3!!), I didnt want the hassle. Its unboltable, so if it doesnt work out I will have to think again about it. But secretly, I enjoyed building the swing out anyway!! So much so, Im building a more heavy duty one for my Dads Defender spare tire.
