US 4.0 TRD Charger in Canada Problems

Fellow Canuks

I wanted to let you know that Toyota Canada is giving me quite a problem with my TRD Supercharger I got from Shannon at Champion Toyota. I was planning on doing the install myself because the dealer up here won't do it. Apparently the TRD Supercharger has been discontinued in Canada which means if you bolt on the US charger Toyota Canada will void your warranty.

The only reason I really need the dealer is to do the ecu flash which is required by the manual that came with the charger. I'm currently trying to find a dealer that will do the ECU flash but I'm having trouble. No dealer will touch me for the flash because the charger has been discontinued it makes the liable if something goes wrong. I said I would sign a waver but that didn't seem to get me anywhere.

I'm currently trying to find a friend that knows a good Toyota mechanic, that might be willing to do the Flash under the table an off hour type thing.

Thought you guys should know.

Wish me luck.

You must be looking to drag race cause those motors are powerfull out the box, 245 horses is more than most chevy 350's produce, a super charger would be **************. Did you find out why it was discontinued it would be a shame to destroy that motor, but it would give you a reason to drop a diesel in it:hehe: Most the dealerships don,t know crap about those trucks yet, find an aftermarket toyota speacialist like Yotaman and if they don't do it they could refer you to someone. Give Larry a call at Yotaman 707-586-7840, he is in Santa Rosa, California.

I found when I bought the truck the engine seemed to be ok, but by the time sliders, arb bumper, winch, skid plates, 33x11x17 tires & Wheels, the truck began to be a bit sluggish and then loading it up with another 700lbs of camping and wheeling gear the truck was really sluggish. Adding another 100hp & 100fbls should do the trick for those loaded times and might give me a bit better mileage, because now the engine shouldn't have to work as yard to move the load it needs to carry.

Thanks for the name & number.:)

Have you regeared, that would make a big difference.

Good question. I expect to see BIG a difference when I switch to 4.56's as others have already done.

But, the 'Charger is still COOL!

Thats kind of the next thing is gears after the supercharger, then an inchworm double case set up. I've done a few calc's and I think 4:56 would rev a bit to much at 75mph which is my highway cruising speed in Canada. If I could get 4:10 or even 4:30 thats what I would go for, plus doing a gear change I have to get a new ARB locker for the front. I've got a RD121 and I have to switch to a RD111 with 3.73 and above. I knew this in the beginning when I bought the locker, but I needed a locker at the time and nobody had any gears for the truck when I got it. Even now I'm having trouble finding gears for it here.

According to this chart, I would need 4.27's. The problem is - they do not exist for our trucks so 4.56 is the best compromise IMO.

4.56 will give you that extra grunt when you need it!

Did you find out why they discontinued the super charger and why nobody will mess with it? Because the 3.4 charger didn't effect the warranty but still had the problem of running lean making a seventh injector needed or the fuel volume and pressure raised.

the only thing the lady would tell me is that they had a few engine failures? but my response was who or what where the conditions that the trucks went through, and she had no response, she was an idiot and wouldn't tell me anything and just kept repeating it will void my warranty if I bolted it on. I think Toyota Canada is pissed off because I went to the US to buy it, but it saved me $2000. Then I said to her well if Toyota had put a good V8 in the truck in the first place we wouldn't be having the conversation. After that she got very quiet and then I just hung up the phone. I then emailed the Managing director of Toyota Canada trying to find out information. That was yesterday, so I hope I will find something out from him. I can't see a difference of the Tacoma for the USA or Canada. The only thing I could think of is a bit of engine mapping for different climate?

Even if my engine did blow up, I wouldn't replace it with the V6 @ $9500. I would do a complete drive train conversion. A GM V8 maybe LS2 or LS6. I think 400hp would be plenty.:smiley_drive:

Call the guys at Matrix Motorsports in Calgary. They are attached to Country Hills Toyota. They may be willing to work with you :)

The Edmonton location focuses more on speed - Calgary is more trucks. The former Matrix manager is the service manager (at least as of a few months ago) and is a good guy. I know it's a drive, but call the Calgary one first.

Really easy to get to from the North too. They are north of the airport - first major overpass coming into the city on the east side.

Would that be Alex popp?? Just want to know who to talk to when I phone. I was hoping to do the install myself (don't really trust people working on my truck) and then have the truck flat decked over to the dealer, but I guess I might have to suck it up and have the dealer do the install

Some good news.

My truck is booked in at Country hills Toyota on Dec 6 & 7 for the supercharger install. They are looking forward to doing the job and will have it for a couple of days to make sure everything is working right. Thanks to Mountainpete for the help and suggestion of Country Hills Toyota in Calgary. All though Toyota Canada has voided my warranty on the truck due to the supercharger install, I'm looking forward to the extra power. :Mechanic:
