Utah: The Maze District - A Family Affair

After arriving at the trailhead to Horseshoe Canyon, we found our patch of ground for the night, and set up shack. Parked just across the way from us was Josh and Jodi in their nice Sportsmobile. We established our individual camps, and decided to hike down into the canyon.

The Great Gallery...most of these pictographs are 4-6' tall, and are unlike any others I have seen, with the negative space inside, as well as the different colors.

The Visitor Book...found inside an ammo can...so we can leave our mark...

The hike is difficult, and took us about 5 hours round trip (does that sound right Nic?) Well worth every minute of it.

Special thanks to Mia and KC for dragging Zander back up the canyon to camp.

Back in camp for the evening, and after being given 'the look' from Hilary for going on without Zander, we enjoyed each others company...with Nic and Hailey sharing some absolutely amazing corn salsa with us. I hope I can get that recipe soon to attempt making it myself.

No, I think it is impossible to go overboard on pics here. Looks like a great trip y'all. Wish I could go there right now....

Awesome! I got a little taste of the Maze district in March of last year. Unfortunately the switchbacks on the flint trail were still "iffy" so I didn't go into the lower portion of the maze and the Doll's House, darn the luck. Had a great time at Horseshoe Canyon and Panorama Point/Cleopatra's Chair, though.

Fantastic pics! I think the Maze is one of the best parts of Canyonlands, primarily because it's so hard to get into that it never gets crowded.

Friday morning we awoke, broke camp, and lollygagged our way to the ranger station, about an hour away from Horseshoe Canyon. We went inside to secure our permits, and discussed some possible changes in our permit, as we were traveling with young children, and we had gotten such a late start. There was another group at the ranger station when we arrived, a group of modified Jeeps, bound for the Maze like we were.

KC suggested we change our permit for the night to a closer spot to avoid arriving in camp late, and setting up in the dark. The ranger suggested that in a 'normal' SUV, people can make the Dollhouse in six hours. We left our options open, and went on our way.

Geez - were you able to tow your trailer down the Flint Trail? I took my 06 Tundra down it last spring, and had managed a couple of four point turns, though coming back up I only had one - I would be impressed to know if someone took their trailer down it?

After taking our time coming down the Flint Trail, (it is fairly tight, requiring backing up in places) we encountered the first of the real 4wd sections. The key to this road isn't difficulty, it is simply a rough road, you really just can't drive fast.

A few pics of Nic coming through some of the rough spots:

At this point, we had been on the trail for about 3 hours. With lots of pictures to be taken, diaper changes, lunch stops, and the like, we were getting worn out.
