LOL, thanks for the link andy, buts thats where i read about the problem:D

i should be in little enough pain to get under the van this weekend and take a look at the brakes.

i'll keep the thread updated with any findings, hopefully it will be helpful to other vario owners.

OK then,

managed to get under the van and check all the pads and wires, everything was fine from what i could see, so started the van up and only the brake chamber warning light came on, not the light i've been having the issue with, which i thought was strange. So i brought the brakes up to pressure and switched her off. Got under the van and i could hear a hissing sound, managed to locate it to a pressure sensor under the compressor, and low and behold the two wires that go into the sensor had managed to come out! Connected the wires back up and hey presto everything looks to be sorted! So new sensor next week from merc and everything should be ok, i've attatched a pic of the culprit, its right in the middle of the pic with the two wires in.

yeah, i hope the other issues are easily sorted as this!

Out of interest, something that has always bothered me about the vario, is the compressor giving up and the hadbrake locking on, leaving me stuck somewhere. Is there a way of releasing it without air pressure? there are those red tabs at the bottom of the spring chambers that look like they do something but i don't know what?

I think the red tab is just a warning label, do not undue the back of the chamber as the very big strong spring will ********** you. :)
Some trucks have the ability to screw a bolt in the rear or the chamber and manually pull the brakes off..... i dont think you can do it on the vario . You could carefully take the pin out the operating arm but you would need levers etc ....

I had the disk & pads changed on mine by an ESB mechanic shortly after I bought it. They extracted the half shafts, took off the hubs, put the new disks (and new ABS rings) on and reassembled. I've only driven about 250k since then - but no leaks. Mine is a 2003 814DA 4x4 so would it have had the changes done or is it also susceptible to these leaks issues?

i might be wrong but i think the early axle with the rear loading diff is the one that had the redesign for the seals...... the later forward loading diff is a different axle with a less troublesome seal arrangement . I think the Vario (big headlight and indicator) vans all have forward loading diffs.... some very late T2 vans (air brakes all round) also had them but earlier T2's (air hand brake) had rear loading

I'd recommend fitting a quick release air fitting to the system and carrying a small 12v or 240v compressor to run off the house batteries. If your in a fix, plug compressor in with a length of hose, run compressor.....that's my plan anyway! I've got the fitting on, but not got round to buying a compressor yet.
