Vehicle Expedition Stove

I'm new to the serious expedition treks and have basically been using my Coleman two burner propane stove hooked to a "tree" mounted to the large propane tank. Yes this works but it takes up alot of room??? When I lived in Africa we had mounts on the back, basically above the taillights that held the smaller tanks. Yes, there is a question in all this.....

1. What kind of stove is being used out here? -family of 4 - Fj cruiser with almost half the cargo area taken up by the Engle.

2. How do you all carry your fuel??? I think I came across some smaller propane tanks at REI a couple of years back but....

Thanks

I use a two burner Coleman. I carry the small 5-6 inch diameter fuel cans. It has never let me down. I don't use for all three meals every day, but hey it has always fired up. The fuel canisters are the same that I used on my lantern (mantles always break so it stays home for disaster duty), and my little propane grill. Multitasking. If the little Coleman gives up the ghost I might look into a hard core stove, but for now I like the old school.

I bought the Primus Atle combo grill and burner. One half is a grill with 12K BTU and the other half is a single 12K burner. Works great for us.

REI-OUTLET has the two burner Primus on sale right now. It packs up small and light and uses the 16.4 oz propane containers you can find anywhere. i also have a small one burner backpacking stove for backup.

Classic style 2 burner colmen with the small 1lb propane bottle conversion, then the conversion to convert that to a 20lb propane bottle. that stove will run for ever on a 20lb bottle :p

TETRIS...right. I never thought of it that way.

If you got a Coleman Dual Fuel Stove, you could fuel it with the Gasoline you carry for your rig.

You can find them at your local garage sales for $20 bucks or less.

No more throwing away propane cylinders.

I use an old Sears Hillery I bought back in the mid 90s.
Same as a Coleman and some of the other clones, and it has the pizeo starter on it for the burners.

This year I got the conversion hose to run a small 5 lb tank I have had for years.
No more carrying extra 1 lb bottles except for teh Zodi shower and the lantern.

I carry the stove and other stuff in those Action Packer containers, and it fills up the FJ very fast, as I have the ARB fridge back there too.

Thanks for the input, I think I'm staying with my trusty coleman and will hopefully find a 5-11 gal tank (depending on the size when I see it). I'm wondering if someone makes a double swing-out bumpers for the FjC (one for the spare tire and the other side for fuel/water cans or propane tanks)? That would be an option to opening up space on the RR and cargo area. Not sure about safety issues though...:coffee:

I just replaced my 20 yr old propane Coleman stove this weekend with a new
Coleman: Fold-N-Go 2 Burner Propane Stove

I haven't used it yet but I like that it folds up, uses the small disposable cylinders or I can run it off a 5lb propane cylinder with a hose & tower w/ a lamp on top.

I've been using the typical coleman 2 burner propane w/ smaller bottles. One advantage of the small bottle is it's easier to pack since it's smaller. The downside is they're not 'easily' refillable and you can easily generate alot of excessive landfill with them.

Last summer I purchased the fold-n-go 2 burner system also. I like it because it has a built in lighter where my old 2 burner didn't and I was always having to make sure I had a flame source (lighter, matches, flint:sombrero:, etc.)

I like the new unit with the exception that it would have been a nice feature to have a lock-open feature so that once unfolded, it would stay open so I can use my Coleman "High Stand" (unit below).

So now because of this design flaw, I have to bring along a piece of wood to set the stove on or it will fold into the stand. <roll eyes>

I use 2 burner propane Century stove. It works but is not as rugged as a Coleman. Buy a Coleman. I got sucked into the piezoelectric lighter which didn't last long. The KEY for us is 2 - 5 gallon refillable propane tanks. Then you can run one bottle all the way down and have a spare. One 5 gallon tank lasts at least a week of unless it's real windy. Another big plus is that you aren't using those little throw away cylinders.

If you don't have space for 2 - 5 gal tanks. Carry a backup throw away cylinder.

Here's a shot of the size of the 5 gal tank. Please ignore the scenery and focus on the size of the tank ;-)

I love liquid fuel stoves. I have a Coleman Peak1 single burner I use for myself. I picked up a circa 1980s 2-burner 425f stove off of craigslist for $5 for when my wife comes, and I recently picked up a circa 1970s 3-burner stove when we go with a group.

I like the idea of one fuel for both cooking and vehicle. Keep It Simple! Yes, I know that the multi-burner stoves I run are not designed for gasoline, but it is close enough for me.
