I really like the idea of having them facing inwards. I see on that 109" SI in the above pictures that he has them mounted behind the axle. But as his 109" his quite radically altered that what works for him might not work for me. I don't think I've got much room behind the axle due to the fuel tank.

Where do they normally go, people have done this before after all, in front or behind the axle. In front of it you get a big diff that's 'in the way' and behind it sits a fuel tank.

I'll have to have a good look.

I'll keep in mind that they shouldn't be on a too great an angle. After all, it's not a rockcrawler, so there's no point installing shocks with 14" travel when the springs won't even allow for that. I guess something like 11" of travel will be fine. But as they say, assumption is the mother of all **** ups (something I've learned the hard way one time), I'll measure everything!

Thanks for all the good help so far!!! Much appreciated!

Hey Koos,

I use rancho 5225s on the rear of my 109, they are about 10 inch of travel, and they are installed in the stock 109 manner, 30-45 degrees facing forward and up, probably unlike yours though as you probably have the 88 style mounts. At 45 degrees inclination they work well. I like the inwards facing setup but in my case it interfered with the exhaust routing and fuel tank as you said, and mounting them ahead of the axle does not work because of the driveline. The 45 degree forward facing setup works pretty well and the mounts are pretty easy to replicate or steal off of a scrap 109 chassis, and they don't interfere with anything as it's basically wasted space.
