Washboard, my kryptonite

long travel suspension :)

Yes. My OME rear suspension fricken blows on wash boards....the Camburg front didn't break a sweat.
It is really missed matched (and I know it)

Considering linking my Tacoma, and strapping it at 16-17" of travel.

and a mini bed cage so I do not loose too much bedspace.

Solo Motorsports has a super beefy 14" travel kit that retains 4WD, for the 1st gen Tacos.

If I were to have picked up the speed today, I would've been bouncing off the road....literally (or my dash would've fallen in my lap). Minor washboard smooth's out at faster speed, the nasty stuff seems like it gets worse.

Ask Scott (ScottB on the forums) what happens when you get going a little too fast on a washboard road. ;)

We've driven on some bad washboard, I think the worst was probably the 20 miles from Ubehebe Crater to Teakettle Junction in Death Valley. It was miserable, our max speed was around 10mph and that was after we aired down to ~15-20 PSI.

I suppose there may be certain suspensions that would help in washboard, but I would think that those same suspensions would probably have issues on non-washboard, so it's not really a viable solution unless you KNOW you're going to be primarily driving on washboard roads.

Some washboards are just bad and excessive speed only makes it worse so you just have to slow down and get through it.

not really, you can blast over most anything, rocks, pot holes, g-outs...and especially in town...over speed humps and bumps, curbs, medians....you can really be a jack ******** hooligan with heeps of suspension travel.

washboards you can't even feel them. good riding bud of mine had a Class 7 Toyota built up, it was a ton of fun, it makes you go looking for stuff to blast over.

Guess I'll lower the psi and deal with it, I'm not going LT anytime soon....

are you putting it in 4WD? 4WD will help smooth things out plus help straighten the vehicle up a again if it get s off line.

I like to drive wash boards about 40-50 mph (maybe a little faster) then you float across it. have to get used to the truck drifting a bit. gas pedal
is your friend the brakes are your enemy ;) think of it like driving a boat.

I find driving slower is annoying.

You don't have to go full blown LT, some UCA's decent coil-overs and a secondary dampening shock. (swaybar is removed, and replaced with the secondary shock)

if you're patient, you can find that stuff used on Race Dezert or TTORA.

or sell what you have, and buy a truck that is already done, might need a little TLC, but everything is there.

I have a 2012 Tacoma DCLB with Icon stage 5 setup on it, and I can fly across washboards at 50 mph.
It's amazing what a difference they make.
Hole in the Rock road in Utah is now like a paved highway, only with a lot more dust!

This is re-assuring. I just ordered Icon 2.5"ext. travel remote resi's for the front and rear with Icons 2.0 bumpstop kit. and Allro expo leafs. Still deciding on a UCA. But I am not going to lie and say that shelling out that kind of dough didn't hurt. So it makes me feel better in the mean time to hear somebody say that it smooths out the washboard roads.:smiley_drive: I find myself on them often and I currently hate them with all of my heart.

Edit: I have an '09 Tacoma DCSB by the way.

Frenchie: Good explanation. In addition to the possibility of damage when going at high speed, it's really REALLY easy to lose control of your vehicle when you are hitting washboard at high speed. Basically, it's almost like driving on ice because with very little contact on the ground, steering or stopping has much less of an effect on your vehicle's direction. I'm sure most of us have experienced that sensation of feeling like we're vibrating right to the edge of a washboard road (reminds me of those old electric "football games" that used a vibrating table - kids, this was long before video games ;) )

Lower air pressure is your friend on washboards. Experiment with what speed works best and watch out for crowned roads especially on turns :)

Can't really expect your expo set-up to drive like a Baja race truck but you can try :)
