weight limits of a span

It's a boat engine... Complete with exhaust manifolds (good for 100# ea) risers, y pipe, bell housing and coupler. Everything including starter, alternator, ps pump, 4 way thermostat housing, cooling expansion... Its turn key drop in... It even has mounts dangling off it right now.

I can easily pull the manifolds/risers/ypipe, and coupler/housing, and lose an easy 300# off the total, and lose likely another 50-75# by removing the accessories... but dang.... It will be SO much easier to shove in there whole... Ya know?

Ah. Well now that makes sense..I was scratching my head about the reason..

will do the pics.. a boating forum i belong to is demanding them too... they wouldn't know the first thing about a gantry, though, and if they were to see it they'd likely ban me for believing i'm carrying out sadistic murder... that's exactly what it looks like... the neighbors will likely feel more comfortable when they see the hoist affixed... i bet they are wondering right now.. :)

Any photos of said gantry?

I built this one years ago, and has served me very, very well.

It is 10' post to post.

Less than $300 wrapped up in it.

Cheap harbor freight hoist, a bit of steel, and some good nylon casters.

The hoist maxes (800+lbs) out before the frame shows any signs of deflection.

I'll get the pics for y'all...

I wish I could have built it much shorter, but the transom of the boat is nearing if not over five feet off the ground before I even start... the engine cover is at least 5.5" off the ground w/ boat sitting on the trailer... the engine will have to be pulled and dangle right at eight feet off the ground so I can move the boat out from under it and then back a trailer underneath. the engine coming out is a 4.3, so it's a bit lighter than the V8 fire breather going in..

it's going to sound like I'm bragging, and I guess I am but it's under no fault of my own- i was born mechanically inclined. I've never met anything I couldn't work on. There are things I REFUSE to do, but I ~can~ do them (just don't tell my wife) such as roofing, and drywalling, and then there are things I do really well... one thing I CAN'T do, and it drives me insane, is weld. I don't care what kind of welding we're speaking of either... it comes out looking like bubble gum stuck all over joints... I've got a buddy that can weld- and to the point I'll showcase his seams instead of grind them down and cover them with paint- he's as good as a robot, and I ain't kiddin'... I ain't... it would take me HOURS to join tube steel of the same kind @ a 45* and then make it presentable. Soldering even gives me pause, though i've gotten much better at that over the years... I just don't know what to do about that, except get some stick time... as it is, I've got open projects burying me for months... until I get a pause, I'll have to outsource my welding and metal work, and build gantry's out of freakin' lumber.. :)

That's some nice work IdaSHO... :victory:

usually an 8" - 10" oak branch will do the trick. the neighbors really enjoy an engine hanging by a chain for a few months. usually Memorial Day to the Fourth of July is long enough.

so I've got this one particular at least 100' tall live (some call it pin) oak in front of my house... it has a limb about 10" in diameter that extends likely 30' from it's trunk almost horizontal- it's maybe 14' off the ground... I guess nature is always amazing, but the tree must have woke up one morning and realized that limb was in trouble, so it grew this little maybe 3" in diameter cross brace off it's trunk and down into the limb... I don't know if I crawled up there with a carpenters square if I could have placed it any better.

anyone who lives with live oaks knows those stupid tiny leaves pile the ****** up- and that tree is one of about five on the property (which is only a half acre)... my wife freakin' hates those things as the leaves pile up all over the place, but she draws the line when they drift into the pool... unbeknownst to me, she hired a dude to remove all those trees... Hell, I like trees- though I ain't huggin' them, leaf blowing (into the neighbors yard, of course) leaves is a small price to pay for shade...

that limb was my huckleberry and what I was going to use as a hoist. The tree is still there as I type, but it won't be much longer... there is going to be at least a week between pulling one engine and planting the other because I want to clean up, paint, and re-loom the bilge of that boat, and knowing my fortune? The day I'd want to plant that engine I'd come home to a sun blazed yard w/ no tree... and no way of getting 1k# up and in that boat.

I see your advice, but my friggin' wife neutralized the hell out of it... :)
