There are two separate issues here. First is weld quality and the second is voltage spikes vs. the ECU.
Even if you follow good practice of positioning your ground close to the weld zone you can still cause a voltage spike through the electrical system, on either side. For me it's a simple question, Is the time it takes to disconnect both cables worth the price of an ECU? My own answer is no.
