Back in October my lovely wife purchased for me a Yeasu FT7800. Now i can't wait to use it. Seems to be a good quality unit. It installed very nice. I will post some pics of the set up as soon as i figure out how to.I want to try to get in on the portal net. Still trying to learn the ins an outs of my radio, which seems to be a little difficult. If any one has some hints let me know?
We have several echolink capable repeaters locally I can hit. Do you all think i will be able to get in from down here in South East Texas?

Thanks

Congratulations on passing the exams! :victory:
I don't know about the repeaters question, but I'm sure someone will chime in soon...

Again...congrats!

Congrat's I passed mine last saturday, I also have the Yeasu 7800 and just started tonight to try and hit the local repeaters. I'm really remote in the mountains and am having trouble talking to anybody.

We did the weekend class at are local ham club. It was one very long weekend. 8 to 5 and 8 to3 . Well worth it though. I missed one and my wife which is not a real technical gall only missed 4. Good luck and study the exam book. The questions on the test come strait from the book>

Wow! two new Hams!

Take your time reading the manual. Programming is really pretty straight forward once you develop your own sequence. Here's the way I do mine:

1. (page 27) Set the tone type to ENC (that's the most common),once done, that's completed for the rest of your programming.

2. Input the frequency via the mike key pad.

3. (page 27) press and hold band/set, dial to #44, press band/set again, dial to the correct tone like 162.2, press band/set again to exit, press and hold band/set again to exit (it seems complicated, but once you've done it a couple times it easy)

4. Select the power level (I generally use 25W)

5.(page 32) Press and hold V\M(MW) key. A # will blink on the display - that's where the memory will be input. If you wish to organize your memory channels, dial to where you want it to be (I have 2M repeaters in 1-50, 70 CM from 51 to 99, Forest Service, Local Police, Sheriff's Office, Search and Rescue channels to scan in the 200+ area) Press and hold V\M(MW) key again to store the channel. If you wish to use a label, the unit should be flashing - waiting for you to input text. I've labeled all my stuff with the location of the repeater (IE: MTELDN1 is Mt. Elden near Flagstaff, AA> and is the first of 3 repeaters programmed in for that location)

Since the type of encoding is already set, repeat steps 2 thru 5, and in many locations the encoded tone is a common one - here 162.2 is used a lot for 2M, so you might not have to change that either. Remember to set the power level - it defaults to high.

Again, it sounds complicated, but in practice you'll get thru it pretty quickly.

The easiest way to manage the memories is through this software. Especially as you get a good number of repeater and scanner frequencies. You will need to get the software and the programming cable. I keep an updated spreadsheet in excel that is my working document. As I make changes to it, I then import it into the programming software and then dump into the radio.

As of now, I have probably 95% of all the working repeaters in AZ programmed as well as some local fire, sheriff, police, FRS, GMRS, etc. frequencies as well. I think I'm at like 450 frequencies.

If you already have programing in the radio, you can do an initial upload from your radio into the program. The software also allows you to program all the radio functions as well which is very handy.

Whatever you do, don't get the software that Yaesu recommends. It's junk.

If you have any questions on the radio, feel free to ask! :sombrero:

Well I think I have the whole programing the DTMF tone encode in to memory. Now to master the rest of the radio. After you do this does your radio use those same tones to only hear the reapeter on that frequency? It seams i have never heard some of the repeaters until after i encoded them in my radio. The manual talks about it but i didn't think the steps i did would do reverse tone squelch. Thanks for all the help. Still working on the pics of my install. I think i have to resize them from my camera. I think they are to big...:mixed-smiley-030:
