What about the GM 8.1 Vortec?

:D
My brother in law has one. 02 8.1 L 4wd. Bought it new. He just had to put a new tranny in his at 60K. He did not tow or abuse the tranny?? I also know he always has a few quarts of oil with him. He has told me he gets about 13mpg at the very best, and most of the time less. I'm actually all over that site, great guys.

I can see the attraction here for you I think as I have a 01 GMC Safari AWD with BFG AT ko's. Its all stock but one heck of a van, love it for the most part. I just don't see the 8.1L in the same league as the GM truck you have now, if that makes sense?

Are you on astrosafarivans.net

Louie

Let me check and see what my "bookmarks" say (there are two rival sites and I only go on the one); yes, thats the one. I think I have the same name and avatar there, too.

Yeah, I've considered getting another Astro/Safari van, and I still may. But I'll probably get a GM or Ford 1/2 ton van and kit it out as needed. And honestly, I've always thought there are way too many cars out there to have two of the same model, you know what I mean? Unless you have a 62 Vette, a 66 Vette, and an '09 Zr1 Vette, what's the point of having two of the same model.

WOW, that is a nice van! ...
Over all, the 8.1L’s are great engines! QUOTE]

I've read your post 5 times so far...will probably read it 5 more times. Good stuff.

Now I'm gonna check on flights to Reno...

I guess you have never had a Cummins:sombrero:

No, sir. But if I had to have a diesel that would definitely be the one I would own! Cummins are great diesel engines….for a diesel. Haven't seen a Cummins available in a G or E van though and Fiat, I mean Dodge, didn't offer it in their old B van nor Sprinter and it sure the heck won't be available in the Fiat Sprinter replacement van. So when it comes to a van, the 8.1L is the only durable engine.

BTW….the 8.1L was only available in the G-van for the 2001 and 2002 model years. That said, they are quite rare. Especially, if you find a 4x4 conversion.

Here is another 8.1L 4x4 G-van on Ebay I have been watching. A perfect blank canvas to create an overland rig.

This reminds me of going out to the bars with my buds when I was younger. Do you want to switch: you take the pop top, and I'll go for the stocker?:Wow1:
As much as I like the big popper, the $82hundy sounds really good in this new world economy.

The diesel Ford will be the first to take a ride on a hook to a dealership long before an 8.1L lies down on you. The Dirtymax is alright but still not as durable as an 8.1L in my opinion. BTW…I work for a diesel engine manufacturer and I own all GAS! :Wow1:

You would be one of the few with that opinion. And those not so endearing nicknames for diesel engines are not used here on the Expeditionportal. I think or hope we are above that.

Now seeing that you work in the diesel industry, is there something you know about diesels that the rest of us don’t?

Really? Well, I form my diesel engine opinions based on real world experience with major national account fleet customers that use all of these engines, not from forming opinions based on what individuals say about their own personal use light duty pickup truck around the campfire (trucks that may only see 150,000 miles in its life time before the body rusts to pieces, no less). And, I used those diesel engine nicknames in good humor without any issue at all.

However, you bring up a good point, I should have specified which Ford diesel will take a ride on a hook long before any GM 8.1L gas engine. I meant to say a late model 6.0L and 6.4L Powersmoke engines will be the first to lay down the on job. The 7.3L was the last of the good diesel engines available in a Ford. The 7.3L will still be running long after the body rusts off a Super Duty in the rustbelt road salt.

And yes, there are things I know that the rest of you don't and if you did you would keep your old 7.3L forever. One thing I can say is, unfortunately, 2009 is the last year of production for the 8.1L big block gas GM engine. The 8.1L gas engine left the Silverado line up in at the end of the 2006 model year, left the medium duty truck market two months ago and will leave the marine and RV market once the engine bank dries up. Sad to see the low cost alternative to a diesel die.

BTW….I love your Flip-Pac. You did an outstanding job with that project!

My brother in law with the 8.1L just called me back. He confirmed the problems again with his Chevy. He complained about the tranny going out and a few other things but never once complained about the 8.1L big block. He seems rather upset about the tranny but had nothing but good things to say about the 8.1L. It does use a little oil and the mileage is just OK but again, its never had any kind of failure.

On a side note. When he ordered the truck I told him he should get the ZF 6 speed, but he got the auto. And that’s been where most of the problems have been.

Off topic... didn't they put the 8.1 in those Kodiak trucks?
