what is your top speed?

Sir, you are stuck in low range. Climb underneath it ans see what is up with your linkage.

me thinks that maybe your linkage for Hi-Low is not working. As stated previously by Cruiseroutfitter, the vaccum operated piece shoud, have NO control over Hi-Low, it really should just couple your front axles together giving you 4wd (if I'm picturing it corectly,).

Or is it different from say a Wrangler YJ or an old 80's SFA Suburban (the two Vacum operated 4wd engagement's I'm intimatly familliar with ;) .We saw alot of those frozen/siezed in the Parking lot at Timberline lodge when we had deep snow, not the best 4wd engagement systems IMO. I like my Manual hubs and lever on the floor...) in that it controls a "collar" of sorts that connects the short side of the axle? As in basicly the front shaft is always sp[inning and being that it's an open diff will automaticly just send power down that "de-coupled" shaft untill you pull it into 4wd...

Eitther way mate. If you can only do 40 @ 4000rpm you're most definatly stuck in 4LO. As CO suggested you should have someone actuate all of the various controls while you look to see if they are working (well those you can see easily) you can also put the truck up on blocks and get the wheels free then run it and see if you can fiddle with ther lever/cable and get it into 2/4 HI...

Sounds like an annoying problem and really I'd be worries that if you've been DDing this rig you've cooked your T-Case gear-oil. THat T-case isn't used to being run around in those low range gears for long periods of time. Does anyone know what besides overheating could happen if indeed he is stuck in 4LO and has been driving it that way???

Cheers

I just had the transfercase replaced by the local 4x4 shop. I pulled it home with a towbar. I have been driving it in my neighborhood at no faster than 15 mph. There is a huge sand pit by my neighborhood and I went and got the cruiser stuck while on 2 wd. I wanted to check the shops work to see if the case would engage into 4x4. Well I locked the hubs and pulled the levers and it engaged into 4wd. once I was out of the pit I got out unlocked the hubs and pushed the levers back into the dash. The cruiser wouldnt move. I then pushed the larger lever into the dash and it moved again. I purposely went back to the sand pit to check if i was only in 2wd, Sure enough it was only in 2wd even with the lever pulled out. Today I pulled out both levers and the cruiser still moved.

I guess I should really look into removing the vacuum actuation and replacing it with a floor shifter.

My 1971 FJ40 with an F engine will get to just over 70 on the flats. I have the 3 speed transmission. I have the vacuum actuated system to engage front wheel drive and the hi/low lever is under the dash.

You are definately in 4 wheel drive low. My 40 will hit a false neutral if the lever isn't pushed firmly to the dash. Don't be afraid to ********** it around a bit.

Doesn't someone make a kit to put a regular floor shifter lever on those old vacuum operated units, or would it be easier to put a later transfer case in it that uses the normal lever setup?

You just need to get the floor shift components off of a similar 1-piece t-case, the vacuum operation just bolts on the side. Regardless of the vacuum its still some mechanical linkage that is binding, missing, broken? and not allowing it to drop into high range (controlled by the lever on the top of the transfer case (passenger side, right up on top).

Take it back and tell them to put the rest of the gears in it:costumed-smiley-007
