here's a vid of the steering rack. It really seems like it should not move this much, esp. with it being new. What do you think? [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qn--YCViZYc"]YouTube- 20100728102130[/ame]

That's definitely excessive play.

Like I said above--Of the six steering racks I’ve replaced in three years, two were defective and all required Energy Suspension polyurethane bushing kits to eliminate the slop associated with the supplied OEM rubber bushings.

The Energy kit is relatively inexpensive.

I def. felt that it was way too much movement. Guess I will do the bushing kit, based on your opinion. Question now is, do you all think this is where my issue lies?

The excessive play displayed in the video could easily be causing the problems you described. While it may not be the "smoking gun", it's a great place to start. Other steering & suspension components could still be worn. My opinion is that IFS issues are a never ending battle with our trucks. The rack play needs to be addressed no matter what because it may shorten the lifespan of the part.

As Tim noted above, the shimmy when braking is probably warped rotors.

I had the steering rack bushings from Wheeler's Off-Road installed on my 4Runner at 195k miles and it really improved the "sloppy" steering. It's really worth doing.

The $1,000.00 alignment

So, after dumping a grand into this thing, I took the 4Runner to a new shop in town claiming to be Toyota specialists. i got a good impression from the owner and felt good that his one employee just retired from Toyota after 27yrs. He assured me that he would know for sure the problem before calling me about the truck. He called me about 1.5hrs later and said I had a Caster bolt that had worked it's way loose. He said it appeared that know one changed the caster during the previous two alignments, therefore no one noticed the loose bolt. Glad the truck seems to be fixed, but 3 months without the Runner and 1k spent, I'm still annoyed.
