Where to mount the face in my 4Runner?

I've finally gotten around to mounting my Yaesu FT-7800 in my 4Runner. The main part of the radio is under the front passenger side seat. However, I can't seem to find a good place to mount the face. There is room to mount it below the radio but then there would be a nasty looking set of gaps on each side. So, where do I put it. I'm sorta stumped. I did a search for installs but most were in vehicles with different shift consoles.

The interiors are different, but I did it this way in my Tacoma:

Yeah, I saw your install. I can't mount mine there because the shifter gets in the way (5 speed).

No, what is that? I'm still VERY green when it comes to this.

RAM mounts are basically a mounting system that you piece together according to your requirements. Lots of different options and combinations that will allow you to anchor to something solid. Worth looking into.

Pro-fit also makes some excellent brackets. I use one for my Sirius radio. They have both vehicle specific brackets (which are a near perfect install) or application specific. Check out their ham specific stuff here: http://www.pro-fit-intl.com/ham/

Curious to find out where you ended up putting this? This project is on the list for me and I can't seem to find any installs besides putting it in the double din spot (which I can't) or mounting it to the front of the air vents (uh...no).

Dont forget to look up. I found mounting radio heads on overhead consoles just above the mirror a great place. Put it in your eyeline and you naturally look twards the radio when checking the mirror.

Not a 4Runner, but as mentioned, there are many mounts on the market that hook to the side of your heater/radio pods.

Here is how I mounted my Yaesu 857D faceplate.

Again, not a 4Runner, but thought I'd post a couple quick pics anyway. Sorry for the quality, they're from my cell phone. This is my FT-7800 mounted on the dash of my '08 Tacoma. I have the radio mounted under the driver's seat, and the wiring is run under the carpet up throught the dash. You can see the wire going to the radio on the right side in the second picture.

When I mounted it, I was afraid it would interfere with the cupholders and front cubby hole, but I've been extremely happy with it so far and have no plans to relocate it. One nice thing about this location is that I can rest my hand on the shift knob and operate the radio easily.

We used RAM mounts for our GPS and HAM because our 80 series is like the 4runner.... not so much room. I like the RAM mounts because they're versatile, you can loosen them up and turn the devices if need be... or simply loosen and remove the upper portion for theft control.

here's ours..
