Which propane camping fire

My only test will be to run it at full blast for max time with a 5lb tank on Sunday so I can get a sense of what to expect on an extended trip.

I run 2 5lb tanks myself, 1 primary and the other as backup, due to the space constraints of our set up and am looking forward to read your test results.

STREGA Edit: I use the styrafoam packing to help protect the ceramic logs when transporting, it does get black from the soot that gets deposited on the logs, have a pair of cheap work gloves for handling the log that I just leave with it. Also made a box from plywood and had it linex to transport it in (can also use it to set the CIAC on if I desire a little more height). The whole setup got a good workout this weekend and came through with flying colors.

I do the same with packing work gloves, another thing I pack along is a cheap dustpan brush. That carbon build up, brushes right off the logs.

Propane has 91,000 BTU per gallon.

So assuming a 5 gallon tank, and the stove...er...firepit...puts out 65,000 BTU at max...

91 x 5 = 455 / 65 = 7


So I'm gonna take a WAG at 7 hours burn at full on a 5g tank.

Right, that's a 20lb tank which holds just under 5G. We can interpolate down from there for smaller tanks.

My "scientific" test resulted in 2.5 of burn time with the 5 lb tank (ran until 10:30 EST). After 2 hours, with the tank drawing down, the flame was noticeably smaller This thing is a gas hog, but that's one of the benefits you pay for if you want a roaring flame.

Me, too. I'm going to take it camping in a couple weeks, and I'll set the flame lower then. If I could get 5 hours of burn time with half the flame I'd probably be ok with the 5lb tank. If not, I think I'll upgrade to a 10lb tank. Costco always charges me for a 10lb fill up anyways!

If I could have a ten lb tank use it for cooking and fire ring ( say 2-3 hour fire )
for a 3 day outing is my goal on fuel useage so will be curious how things go with fuel useage

Thanks for the test.
That new fiberglass tank I bought it an 11 lb tank, so in theory it would go for five hours on full.
I would more than likely run it at half blast, so if I would squeeze ten hours for three nights that would be great.
That is if I need to use it if a burn ban is on.
