Another vote for the 220V welder!..Miller makes a nice unit! Got one of those and a few more!....

Get one used and it will make you much happer in the long haul!

...If you have a water heater or clothes dryer in your garage, you already have 220, you just need to extend the line and install an extra box.

I tried that...

At least in my house the 220 circuit for the hot water heater was setup for 30A, and I popped the breaker the first time I used it.

Total cost for adding a new 50A breaker ($20.00) and 6 gauge wiring (roughly $1.50 a foot) is relatively cheap.

Ditto! Using 110V for welding compared to 220V is a little like the comparison between communicating with CB vs HAM.

As DD has stated elsewhere: Cry once!

Your welder must draw a whole lot more than my Millermatic 210 does....IIRC, at 220v, it is rated at 27 amps (max). That works out to 5940 watts. Since the atcual voltage supplied to my house is just over 250volts, that pushes the real world amp draw down to 23.76. I have probably never pulled that many amps though, as I have never had the heat turned all the way up (well, not since I took the machine home...).

I have a [single] 30 amp circuit that feeds both the Miller and the Hypertherm, and has never tripped a breaker. What welder are you using?

It's a Lincoln 170.

The root of problem is the 100' long 6 gauge extension cord I used to get the welder out to the rig. The trail rig was too tall to get into the garage, so I took the welder and cart to the rig...

The extension cord has been very handy, but I do have to adjust the juice up considerably when using it.
