why convert to diesel

Why worry about diesel conversions when you can simply
buy a Land Cruiser that came with diesel from the factory.
Just take out a second mortgage, and you're good to go!

Both these vehicles have California title and current registration.

Well, I suppose we are fortunate in Canada (compared to the States) with our 15 year importation rule (though there is rumbling that Canada may choose to increase that to 25 years, for whatever reasons). One can get 91/92 HDJ80's very similar to the 96 for sale in California, for about half of what they are asking for theirs, and with less mileage. A guy I know imported one from Japan with less than 100,000 kms and all told it cost him $22,000 cdn licenced and in his driveway (beautiful truck, mint inside and out). Another guy has one for sale around Toronto and is asking $18,000 cdn for it (about 180,000 kms, fitted with a snorkel and a lot of options like the 96). In my opinion, there actually seems to be a bit of a glut of Japanese-imported diesel Land Cruisers in Canada, as every 2-bit dealer and shadetree importer has tried to cash in on the market (including bringing in a lot of the more trouble-prone Prados), and there seem to be many on the used car sites, that go unsold for months.

Unfortunately for me, I can't see myself driving a RHD vehicle, in spite of the advantages, so doggedly pursue my quest for a worthwhile 60 series diesel (Canadian model).

16 Years on ExPo. Whoa!!
I would say though, if I ever were to get an 80 series that would literally be my dream 80 series. That is one of the coolest most awesome setup 80's I've seen :)

Yes, same issue here - I looked. Import rules - too restrictive. West Coast Cruisers has some nice vehicles but they are still high-mileage used, or pretty pricey. For much cheaper, I can swap a brand new 2.8L modern tdi into my Land Cruiser (which cost $2500) and retain LHD (we already have a RHD Land Rover and it is a challenge to drive in the US - particularly since I regularly drive a LHD in Kenya on the 'correct' side of the road, and thus when I come home and try to drive here with the Rover, I'm always veering to the left!). That seemed like the best solution for me, since I can sell my Tacoma to pay for the swap.

43K for a 96 diesel is crazy IMOP. If he gets it, great for him.

But you can buy a low miles clean 1hd-t engine/trans for a 91-97 80 series if you wish.

The engine/trans combo is about 10k. It can be done so clean you will think it is stock.

There is a guy doing these conversions in Van(ex Toyota master mech). He is in connection with G and S cruiser parts. They import the engines.

Whats a really nice 80 go for? 10 K. I paid 6500 cnd for my 91. It's going to get a 1hz diesel. Just saving some cash, then it will replace the thirsty 3f-e.

Just curious, is the 1HZ and 1HD-FT are the only toyota diesel options for the Landcruisers?

Someday I am dreaming of going the Isuzu route.....:Astrologist:

El Gringo Spectacular!
Both of those rigs are really, really nice...but a ten year old truck for a showroom new price...nope...$35-45K is a lot of gas $$...

Many diesels have been used in LCs. 4 cyl B, 3B, 13BT; 6cyl H, 2H, 12HT, 1HZ, 1HD-T; now the V8 4.5L twin turbo diesel. Also the Hilux D4-D in the Prado range.

I got lucky. I bought my low mile 1HZ/H55/Tcase for less than 5 grand US. That was four years ago.

Mostly the engines of choice are:

1HZ 4.2 liter indirect injected 12 valve normally aspirated six (GREAT motor to turbo charge. When done it's performance envelope is the same as the 1HD-T)

1HD-T 4.2 liter direct injected turbo charged 12 valve six
1HD-FT 4.2 liter direct injected turbo charged 24 valve six
1HD-FTE same as above BUT computer controlled.

To answer your question. Why change to diesel? Superior engine. Superior power delivery. Superior mileage. Superior longevity. Superior sound! Superior fuel availablility around the world. That's why.
