Dell Inspiron Duo price drop

The Dell Inspiron Duo caused a bit of a sensation when it was introduced in January. It's a convertible netbook, with a screen that pivots into a tablet configuration when you don't need the keyboard. Enthusiasm faded when Dell priced the Duo at $550.

Now the Microsoft Store is offering the Duo for $399. That's a pretty good deal for a netbook with these specifications, plus the ability to pivot into tablet mode:

Buy Once, Cry Once
Be cautious of the Duo. I have heard bad things from friends who bought. They say its slow, and when in tablet form is practically useless. If you are thinking of buying one I would highly suggest going to a store to play with it first.

Lenovo, some of their x200 tablets are built to mil-spec for condensation, vibration and dust! I highly recommend putting an SSD drive in any pc/netbook/tablet that you use, especially since most are coming with vibration detection nowadays that shuts the HDD down. Install SSD and disable vibration detection. Lenovo's also have built-in GPS receivers when you get the 3G Qualcom card. Works good.

What is the best touch screen tablet for around $400? ill be running the delorme navigator.

Whatever you choose, I would opt for something with an SSD. They take vibration much better. I use a traditional IDE drive and I have had it shutdown due to vibration while on the trail. Granted I was running at a good clip. Whatever Lowrance uses for a drive is pretty much bulletproof. I have YET to get that one to shut down.

I use an Xplore tablet. Mil-Spec stuff. Nice but a little dated compared to the newer gen stuff. But it does everything I need.

Pretty much any Tablet/Netbook PC will work with Delorme? I am going to look for something with windows 7 1+GB Ram 100+GB of HD.
How do i know if it has a SSD? Will it say that in the HD specs?

It's it's running windows 7 it should work for Delorme's software.

The hard drive specs should point out if it has an SSD. It if doesn't note an SSD then you can safely assume it's using a standard hard drive.

I'm running an inexpensive ($300) Acer netbook with 16gb of ssd space for my onboard street (MS Streets & Trips) and off road (Nat Geo Topo) navigation solution. It also has 2 SD card slots so I'm running two 16GB class 6 SD cards for added storage. Since gps programs don't do much if any writing to the SD cards it's should be fine.

I've been watching the Windows Tablet and Ipad (already own one) options as well since they would be a far better solution overall.

Samsung Series 7 Windows tablet

Samsung is showing a tablet version of its "ultrabook" design: A fast Intel i5 processor, 4 GB RAM, 64 or 128 GB solid state drive, and 11.6 inch 1366x768 color capacitive touchscreen, running Windows 7 in a tablet form. Samsung has added software to Windows 7 to support the touchscreen. The screen includes an active digitizing layer for use with a stylus. A wireless keyboard is an option.

Once Microsoft releases Windows 8, which includes support for touchscreen, we'll see more tablets like this one.

7 already has native support for all wacom based screens/digitizers. 8 will simply have a user interface option that is better suited to slates.
