Would you make this trade?

I really like that tacoma, he's on several of the 4x4 forums, maybe even here too.

Your truck is worth WAY more though.

I don't know if he's here or not. It is a SICK looking tacoma, and it would fit my needs well, but I may just need to check out how the dodge does before I commit to trade... It does seem like I could get alot MORE for my truck if I just sold it outright. Thanks for the input so far.. keep it coming!

I would love to have a dodge like yours for an exploration rig. Granted, I'd probably pick a short box for my needs, but yours with a nice functional suspension kit (I heard KORE did some great stuff for full sized dodges, but that was a few years back), 33s or 35 mud terrains, a camper shell or FWC and maybe a selectable locker in the rear. It would be nice to be able to pack my truck to the gills and know I wouldn't be in the slow lane with the motorhomes the whole way up into the hills.

That's kinda what I am thinking.. I have a limited slip in the rear. I may do a selectable locker up front, then a selectable in the rear eventually. I am looking into some sort of shell/canvas cover for the truck now... I think you guys have convinced me to stay with my Dodge for a while.

Coming from a 03 Taco owner, I'd keep the Dodge. Your truck is very clean and it has a ton of potential and not everyone and their dog has one. You could do a lot of bet stuff with it and while it will never be a competition rock crawler, neither will the Tacoma. I wouldn't put 35's on my Taco either, I don't think the suspension and drive train would hold up for long. Before all you Tacoma Luddites start barking, I am talking about long term as in 10-15 years where as 32's would. The Taco does look good and the color is right but the interior looks like it has seen slightly better days.

The other posts have given me some other things to ponder upon, so here goes:

It seems that many are building expedition rigs, others are going for the rock crawlers and yet others are doing dual purpose rigs. I say look at your wants vs needs and do what makes sense for you. In my state, I can do 80% of the trails in my current rig. The others that I want to do I can hike to. Years ago when contemplating what the next step for my rig was I decided that rather than invest $2000 on more modifications, I would buy a beater rig to serve for those other trails I wanted to do as well as woodcutting and hunting duty. Your current truck has a third of the miles, but will most likely meet your needs for much longer than this other truck will. If you need it to do more than you are asking, you may want to consider a beater rig or bed toy for those duties. I have seen a lot of expedition rigs with a motorcycle on the back or ATV/tow rig behind it for other duties.

Keep the Dodge!!! The 5.9 cummins is not going down in value since all the issues with the 6.7 EPA mandated crap and the decreased MPG.

I didn't read the whole thread, but that tacoma looks to be built very nicely!
your not gona like how small the inside of the tacoma is vs the dodge, but it sure is a nice truck!

The Dodge is a nice truck. So is the Taco. If you can handle losing the power and towing ability of the Ram the Taco would make a great expo rig for you. Alot more in the Expo outfitting department. I would sell the Ram out right and buy a nice used Taco with less miles.

I've seen that Tacoma posted over on TTORA. It's cool and has a lot of nice/expensive parts on it, but your Dodge is worth much more. The miles are not an issue as these trucks can easily go 400,000+, they only contribute to a lower book value.

I agree with some of the posts that 35's are really pushing it on a Tacoma as the CV's are the Tacomas weak link. Unless it had undergone a quality solid axle swap (SAS), I wouldn't run them. Besides, for expedition travel you don't need 35's, 31-33 inch would be a much better choice.

Lastly, the tubbing job he did looks marginal from the photos. If your serious about trading, be sure to see it in person and give it a thourough inspection.

Seems like you've made up your mind for now to keep the Dodge, but I'll throw in my .02 anyway.

I had an 07 Ram Quad Cab 2500 CTD 4x4 longbed, and sold it and bought an 09 Tacoma Acess cab 4x4.

My thoughts...

Almost anytime you swap vehicles you lose money/time/energy.

I miss the space, payload and power of the Dodge, and the mpg!!!

I absolutely love being able to now fit in parking spaces :wings:

The Dodge was a real PITA to drive on the narrow roads around here, and there is no way it could maneuver the trails I take my Tacoma on (Cow Mountain, Sierras. That being said, if I were in Utah (is that where you are?), I'd probably have kept the Dodge.

You could make a sweet CTD overland rig with what you have, keep us posted with pictures of you getting this rig off the pavement.

Its a bad time to sell a truck, great time to buy a truck, especially a modified truck. For $11K, that seems like a fair price. You could probably get more for your truck, but I don't know how much more, and then you have the time and hassle of selling it.

I think you have made up your mind, but since its obviously something you want to do, have you driven the truck? I am thinking that once you see the truck, crawl around the truck, and drive the truck, you will know whether or not you want to make this deal. Both trucks look to be in great shape, but you get a better feeling when you see something up close.

thanks for all the valuable input everyone! I am still on the fence about it... and i still need to run it by the wife, so we will see how that goes. i am guessing she will want me to keep the Dodge, so thats probably what i will do. I am in southern california and he is in Utah.. so trading may prove to be a hassle especially if we met up then decided not to swap... i will have to think about it some more, and get the CFO's (read wife's) approval before I go any farther...

You are in my neck of the woods.
I will tell you right now the Dodge will be great for the deserts and most of the mountains around Cali. If you plan on Anza, Mojave, Death Valley & Sierra mtns - you have a great vehicle to start building up.

Your disadvantages are breakover and turning radius. Lift will help and a bit of armor will be good insurance against body damage.
Honestly, with some mods, you will be good for many trails thru the western states.
Might be tight sometimes but that's part of the fun!

Hope to see you out there sometime
