Wrecked

I'm just catching this, but did the force of the wreck drive the roof rack forward a foot? Is that normal!? Wouldn't that be very dangerous with a fully loaded rack?

Great to hear it cranked up! I guess it will make a very good parts vehicle.

It is a known issue on all the Land Rover roof racks of that style (gutter mount). On heavy use vehicles they are secured with locating support bars that tie into the front and back of the car to avoid this exact behavior. Unfortunately just how it is. Not uncommon to have a hard braking event or an accident literally throw the entire rack forward off the car.

To Town Diver: Very glad to hear the engine is good! Looks like you will have an excellent parts resource to transfer things over to, and hopefully a good insurance check.

True.

I've read about various methods used to secure them better when it comes to the older Series Rovers; don't know about the Discos and new.

Many Series owners have added extensions to the front of their rigs. These get locked in by attaching the supports to the windscreen supports.

Precisely. Imagine the opposite orientation of that bar, on defender for example it would slope down to prevent forward movement of the rack. The series ones are more for adding roof real estate like that over the windscreen

Insurance called while I was at training yesterday. Declared a total loss. Hoping to get the roof rack off before they move it.

Even if they move it you should still have the opportunity to get the rack off. Look for anything else you might want/need that isn't officially "part of the vehicle" (don't take the spare or things that would normally be there for example but if you had a SPOD or something like that it's not going to add to their valuation). Start checking the AutoTrader and local vehicles for sale to use as examples or comparisons to your truck. It's best to have a figure off an actual vehicle for sale to argue your value.

Scrap value is usually set at 10% by Ins. Company. Maybe you can negotiate keeping it by ‘not’ totaling the vehicle, that way it’s still belongs to you (with your title)

his retain ownership price will be peanuts. Easily worth just one or two parts on the car. That engine alone is worth it several times over.

If it's a gutter mount you run this risk. Ideally you should have vertical legs on the rear of the rack, connecting to the rear rain gutter. Some old-school Series/Defender racks had this feature...

Bummer about the subject Disco, and scrapping that RRC breaks my heart.

Defender ties into the tub on the sturdy ones.

That sucks! happened to me on Monday someone in a Tacoma pulled out in front of me in my LR3. Insurance just totaled it. Mines not heavily modified but I did just put a bunch of new parts on it that I wish I could get back.

I may be interested in that rack and other bits you pull off.
I am just up the road from you.
Sorry about the loss, looks like you put some great work into it.

If you end up buying it back and need a place to store it until you can find a donor lmk.

Thanks! I think I have a couple people interested in buying it to grab the engine out of. Still waiting on the insurance, but I will most likely be buying her back. Hoping to hear something Monday as my rental expires wednesday! Keep you all updated!

You may want to check and see what you are paying per day for storage on the truck. The cost can be significant.

Receipts! You can be reimbursed for all of that plus labor. If you're really nit picky, you can even get reimbursed for the fuel in the tank...
