yaesu 7800 remote mount speaker options?

just finished up the install in teh 4 runner. i had to mount the body of the radio under the seat and while i can hear it, i would like to hear it better. what would be a good remote mount speaker? if possible i would like to pick one up at radio shack. it is the only place local to me that woul dreally carry something like that. i'll order if i have to but would prefer to just go pick one up if i could. thansk ain advance.

I'm new to HAM and am in the same boat as you. Look in your manual for the radio to find the speaker requirements. My radio calls for a speaker with 4 ohms of impdeance and capable of handling 3 watts of audio output (Yaesu 2800m for reference). I'm sure the Shack has something but it's got to be a heavy duty one because the radio has an amp for the external speaker.

I've got a 3rd gen 4runner and there isn't a ton of room for a clean install of the speaker so it'll be intersting to see what you come up with.

I personally would avoid radio shack speakers. Never like them. I would recommend a good communication grade speaker at least 3 inches if not 5 inches in size. As for mounting location that will vary by vehicle, but I like mine
on the overhead consoles pointing down at my ear.

The very best speakers I've ever found are surplus Motorola speakers...built like a tank, heavy, usually available at ham flea markets and such.

I also like surplus military vehicle speaker cases - get a new speaker (only) from RS or whatever and use the case with a new element and cord. Built like a tank too, since they were used in them.

A lot of folks use the MFJ 281. I use it with my Yaesu 857-D. I have it mounted behind the drivers seat, high on the B pillar, right behind my head. I can hear it quite easily and routing the cable to the radio under the seat was quite easy. It's also easy to hear it from the passenger seat, in case I'm sitting there while navigating/ communicating.

A lot of MFJ gear doesn't seem very well made, but this speaker is pretty nice. I wanted to buy the Yaesu speaker, but the shop where I bought my radio didn't carry it.

I was able to mount mine in the headrest of both my Land Cruiser and my Saab.

Works great for me and it helps me keep the volume low so it does not bother the lady sitting next to me so much.

I've been using the Radio Shack amplified speakers for decades and never had a problem with them. Plus they're nice and loud. Their other speakers aren't worth a darn IMHO but I really like the amp'ed ones. I've used pretty much all the others and while some are better you'll spend way to much money for them.

the speaker reqirements are 8 ohms and 2 watts. may give a cheap RS version a try first, just cause it's local. there aren't a whole lot of ham flea markets or surplus stores around here. i knoiw alot of the utility company's run the motorola stuff so it must be good. i think fi the RS speaker don't work then i may go the motorola route. thanks for the info

Yep, built very well, great fequency response, works perfectly and it's cheap.

Here is where I mounted mine. It is the cheap $14.00 one from Ham Radio Outlet...works VERY well and I am happy.

Have an identical one on the opposite side of the console for my CB

I have a surplus GE/Ericsson that's similiar to the standard issue Motorola HSN6001 that I've also used. They sound about the same to my ears as the internal speakers in our mobiles in terms of fidelity (e.g. biased for voice), but they are considerably louder. Anything smaller than these 5" comm speakers will sound even more tinny.

Best bet is stick with what works and the Moto speakers come up on eBay all the time for cheap. I wouldn't spend much more than ~$10 for this class of speaker. BTW, at least one bud of mine has that MFJ Cleartone and it seems just fine, too. His is in a soft top 4Runner and it's plenty loud and he can usually hear OK on the highway.

Just a thought, I am trying to investigate using the stock tweeters in the door for the HAM speaker. I have my ICOM under the seat too, and the tweeters are not used by my stock stereo.
