Just a thought, I am trying to investigate using the stock tweeters in the door for the HAM speaker. I have my ICOM under the seat too, and the tweeters are not used by my stock stereo.
Third gen 4Runner, right? Think they might be a bit small, they're like 1" or so. Something like that would be down 10dB or more from 100Hz up to around 1KHz and start becoming efficient in probably the range of 3KHz to 4KHz. Most of the energy in the human voice is between 250Hz to 2.5KHz and so the ideal speakers tend to be in the 3" to 6" range. However, they might be very useful if you use them in addition to a built-in speaker or a bigger speaker some place else. This is because they would focus the upper end of the voice range right at your ears and that would help a lot in a truck.

when i was at RS the other day all they had was there hous brand. no midlands. i didn't see any dimensions on teh web site. i'm thinking about mounting the speaker for the ham in the stock front speaker location inder the dash. if you could imagine, the speaker woul dbe at my left knee. i think this would work good if i could find a speaker that would work.

Just to add to your ideas, here's what I did in my Tacoma.

Started with this speaker:

Uniden Bearcat ESP5

Did some modifications:

Put it in my headliner... perfect location IMHO.

Thanks... my wife refers to it as my MacGyver speaker.:D

For anyone considering this, I'm continually impressed with the sound quality from this speaker/location. It almost seems as if the sound signal is wired directly to my brain through my right ear.

Check out your closest Truck Stop...

One of the best places to find remote speakers for your radio is your closest major truck stop... the normally stock all kinds of stuff for the CB crowd.
They work fantastic and the price is right.

I have two mounted under the seats in my truck, I just put some "hook" side velcro on the back and press it into the carpet under the seats.
My Kenwood radio is a dual band unit with dual speaker outputs, so I put one side thru the passenger side speaker and the main band side through my side.
Works great, the separation lets me know which band is active this way.

You just have to be careful to route the wires away from the slide tracks for the seats, or they might get cut when someone adjusts the seat forward or back.

Install is really quick and the velcro seems to hold them tight even on the roughest roads.

I believe in keeping the speaker close to the ear. Makes a huge difference in clarity when the cab road noise picks up. Here's what I did to my Matrix, and also Tacoma. Very simple, very hidden, very effective.

What do you use the Rangr radio for? We still have a few in service for Animal control to use but all the others have been taken out of service.

I don't use my Rangr anymore as its too much of a hassle. I'll use it for a base station when chasing but thats about it.

I did completely steal this idea though (thanks trump!) and got my Motorola mounted up.

I've had this for a while but it fits in the thread. It's my PTT and headset box.

(old mount for it, I've since bulked it up and make it better but still in the same location.)

John, WA4DQS,

Great idea! I love the simple solutions.

Another super simple fix I alternately use is piping my 857D audio into my truck's stock stereo speakers via a good old fashioned cassette adapter. Talk about va-va-va-VOOM audio for next to nothing! newer vehicles have the "MP3" jack that works equally well. You can use basic stereo adapters to get it out of all speakers.
