80 series rear cargo storage/platform solutions with and without spare tire pics

One of my goals this holiday routine is to come up with a storage/platform solution for the rear cargo area to include the spare tire (since I no longer have space on the roof). Should I continue to keep it mounted (strapped) upright and build to the right or lay the tire flat and build a platform above the tire? My ideal situation would be a dual rear Kaymar bumper, but that's more than I can afford right now. So who with a similar dilemma has come up with a solution that's meeting their needs? I'm leaning more towards laying the tire flat and building a platform above it. This way I can support my two cases, hard mount my Baja rack dual fuel can holder, and Igloo cooler; Along with the chairs, tables, and other camping/expo needs. The RTT really sacrificed a lot of my roof space. I'm also struggling to figure out where to put the Hi-Lift and shovel. When I'm by myself it's easy cause I remove the 2nd row, when I have the wife and kids its a whole nother story. Trailer? More money than I have as well. I bet I'm not the only one in this situation. :)

I'm going to be building something for the back as well. Probably a simple drawer system which will have a cooler mounted above it for now and later down the road it would become a fridge. I've ordered a 4x4labs rear bumper with swingout to get the spare tire out of the back of the truck.

Even with it back there, layed flat, I have much more room than is available in my FJC. I had originally rigged up the tire standing up which was unstable and didn't evenly distribute the weight. Would one of the swingout options attaching back to the frame (no rear bumper) be an option? That would be simple and cost effective. .02

I would vote trailer...especially if you have to put your spare inside...that's a lot of space...most trailers I have been looking at can carry a spare and lots of fuel...which takes care of needing the rear bumper (3500 for a Kaymar goes a long way toward a trailer)
I don't personally like carrying fuel inside the truck...I have designed and thrown out multiple "plans" for rear storage systems in my 80...lots of nice ones documented out there...
Since I don't like RTTs I sleep in the back of mine (just front seats) or in a ground tent...with a fridge and KANZ kitchen/pantry in the back there is just enough room for me and my gear...when my GF comes she has to sleep outside because the fridge takes up too much room...since I like sleeping inside and would like her to be there too, I am going to head the trailer route...will also keep the inside less cluttered with dirty, muddy stuff...

Why not run your spare underneath until you get a rear bumper? I realize the argument against this practice, but based on your trip reports and the type of traveling you guys do, it will be fine.

That being said, if I were transporting a spare tire inside I would transport it upright.

Personally, I would get over the departure angle thing and leave it underneath.

(I'll also mention that if you have an aux fuel tank, OBA, winch, or any other stuff under there I missed it, and do apologize!)

Hi-Lift can be mounted on your ARB, anywhere on the rack for your shovel? Maybe some quickfists on the "deployable" side of your RTT then pop it off before you open the tent?

Very well thought out...I like this a lot. Light weight, functional, accessible, organized, and with room to spare. Thanks for sharing. For now that where my shovels going as well...left of the spare.

Anyone with pics of a platform built over their spare laying flat? Lets see them. :)

The previous owner of mine had built a box for the tire itself to avoid the tire smell in the vehicle. I wasn't a big fan as it took up the vast majority of the storage space. Here's a photo of it.

I removed it so if you're ever near Oklahoma you're more than welcome to have it.

Thanks for the offer. I'm sure someone a little closer would be more than happy to take it from you. Thanks again.

That's a ginormous box for the spare tire, Spenser! :Wow1: Takes up a lot of cargo space. Look forward to see pics of the new rear bumper.

I agree Thong. I was hoping to make a subtle point to the OP that he should either stand the tire up or try to move it outside of the cargo area. I think one drawer would suffice in holding all of my tools and recovery gear leaving room for cargo, ice chests, people, etc. Need to give Luke a call to see where we stand on the rear bumper, I'm getting anxious.

This is how The LC currently looks with tire upright and all the gear. I want to get more organized while utilizing and maximizing my space more efficiently given current configuration. This is all temporary until a rear bumper happens my way, until then I'm brainstorming and seeking inspiration from others all through trial and error of what'll work best for us.

My plans now include relocating the spare back down below, making room for the fuel up on the rack ( will have to push the RTT forward), consolidating and further organizing everything else. We'll se how it goes the next coming weeks.
