How did I do? Warn 8274 inside.

Sorry for not posting this in the "recovery equipment and tools" forum, but I know Warn is the sponsor here in the domestic full size forum, and this IS going on my '89 Jimmy...

I picked this up off Craigslist for $600. I'm going to have to buy a remote tomorrow at the local 4 Wheel Parts to confirm it works since the owner lost his (he claims it worked fine the last time he used it). Edit: Got a remote from 4WP for $70 +tax

So far I have seen the following markings on it: Serial number 292269 and CQ7. Can anyone tell me what the CQ7 means, or the date of manufacture from the serial number?

It has a fair amount of surface rust on the bolts, nuts, snap rings, etc but from what I've heard this model is the most bullet proof winch you can buy, and I've seen a thread where a poster rebuilt his after over 20 years of use.

Thoughts?

What could go wrong?
Nice score! You could probably hook it up to a battery and jumper across the controller plug terminals for a quick check.

Thanks!

After some research, it looks like this was manufactured March 17, 1987.

Now just need to find out which remote to use... Thanks for the info on jumping, I think I'll try that tomorrow or Sunday when I have time.

Edit: used a small wire to jump the connectors and hooked up the postive/negative leads to a battery I had in the garage... It works both out and in! Looks like I ended up with a functional (albeit cosmetically imperfect) unit.

Looks like a good score! The 8274 is much-venerated, and it should pull a gasser Jimmy just fine.

There's a rep from Warn that posts on here occasionally - perhaps he could be of better assistance figuring out what remote to get.

I took a picture of the remote connector in case it will help the Warn rep (or anyone else) identify the correct controller. Looks like a three pin.

Cool! You scored big!

That looks like the same pin out as the one I just picked up. I do have the remote, so I'll take a look at it later on tonight and see if it has any markings for you.

That's the "newer" style plug if that helps any. I'm sure Andy will see this and confirm.:bigbossHL:

Nice score! And yep, you can find just about any rebuild parts you may need, there's even a beefier motor available for them now, not there's anything wrong with the original ones.

+1, the older style only had four pins.

They're relatively easy to rebuild. You should at least take the top of the gear housing off and change the oil in the bottom before using it in earnest.

As others have stated, the number of pins is different on the two controllers. Count how many you have, then order appropriate remote. Simple as pie!

They had a video on either Extreme 4x4 or Trucks where they rebuilt one of these. Seemed a fairly simple straight forward project.

I've bookmarked a series of videos on YouTube that cover the rebuild, and you're right it does seem pretty simple. However my winch is not leaking oil, and sounds to be working just fine so I'm going to hold off on the rebuild for a while. The oil inside looked relatively good (not anywhere close to the dark that comes out after an oil change) so I'm assuming it just wasn't used very much in it's lifetime. I cracked it open, drained and cleaned, and refilled w/ 30w non-detergent per spec.

I installed it and an old Warn bumper today (refinished the bumper) and it seems to be working great so far. Can't wait to put it to use in real world conditions.

Thanks for all the responses!

Hey I looked at mine, there are 6 pins in that connection it just looks like only 3 active ones on the winch side. There are no markings on my controller so I am afraid I am no help. I don't know what all the options look like but mine is a pistol grip with a rocker switch for your thumb.

I have a few rogue warn remotes from the past I will check if I have any with the newer plug style....jluck:bigbossHL:
