Jeek JK Critical Spares List

I know that we had several of these list going on in the Land Rover page and for good reason (after three land rovers I discovered that the critical spare was a full time mechanic:yikes:). While I expect a much smaller list I still think that it is a truly critical effort. So what are everyone's thoughts for critical Jeep JK spares for a long term or remote adventure or expedition?

I drove a TJ 65,00km (40,000 mi) from Alaska to Argentina. While it's not a JK, I think the basic spares required are the same.
I tried to take as little as possible, and only took the following, concentrating on the cooling system:
  • Oil filter X 2
  • Air filter X 2
  • Serpentine belt
  • Top & bottom radiator hoses & hose clamps
  • Top & bottom heater hoses
  • Coolant for rad (and always water on board)
  • Oils for engine, transmission, transfer case and diffs
  • Spare headlight
  • Lots of fuses, globes wire & a multimeter to figure it all out

Obviously my list does not account for critical engine or drive train problems/breakages.

Next time, I'll add
  • More tire stuff (lug nuts, lugs, valves, etc.)
  • Possibly suspension spares like a shock or two (heavy)

Woods of dominion off road was trying to put a premade kit together but I thnk it stalled. Here are the notes from jk forum.

If I'm breaking the internets by reposting the info let me know

Tools:

13mm 12 point closed end wrench for break caliper removal
21mm socket for removing brake calipers in case of broken axle
35mm axle nut socket
18mm socket (just because it's often not included with standard socket sets)
7mm Alan wrench (not sure what for)
T-40 torx for hard top removal
T-50 torx for door removal
-18mm socket (18mm fasteners are common on the JK and this socket is not included in most socket sets)
- 7mm Alan bit. I needed it once, but don't remember what for.
- Fluid spill clean up kit

Inexpensive spare parts: These are parts that have been known to come loose and/or get lost on the trail.
Control arm nuts and bolts
12 point brake caliper bolt
Spare transfer case shifter cable clip
Spare Fender Clips

a couple non jk specific: tire kit, duct tape, giant zip ties and bailing wire are universals for me. a clamptite looks like it would be super handy too http://www.clamptitetools.com/faq.html#Use.

Spare transfer case shifter cable clip

If you have not modified or upgraded your transfer case shifter cable (top and bottom clip), and you plan on using 4WD on any type of frequent basis, you REALLY should carry a handful of these clips....they are cheap....both in quality and cost. They are prone to break.

Your brake caliper bolts have been known to come loose? Locktight is your friend I'd suggest a big batch of blue because every time I've went to get some more here lately it's gone up in price. The thread is priced in the stupid level, the gel is nicer to work with than the liquid.

I dislike those things.
You burn your arm under the JK or you rip apart the interior over a less than a dollar part.

The 7mm alan is for the wheel speed sensor. Also should include a 13mm 12 pt socket for the 3 hub bolts.

Depends on the kind of wheeling you do, I carry spare front axles and all the tools required to replace them.
The stock ball joints are junk, might want to carry a spare upper and lower with a really big hammer.
At least 3 tube of quick-steel until I build a oil pan skid.

Let's keep this thread going :sombrero:

x2 on the T-case shifter cable clip

another thing i wonder about is the plastic Idler pulley because i notice it was a problem on the older grand cherokees. I havent heard too many problems with the JKs but wouldnt hurt to carry a spare $10 pully and a serpentine belt

This is the part that often breaks on the JK transfer case.
These are the part numbers I found via a search.
P/N68064273AB (bushing)
P/N68017186AA (clip)
The whole transfer case linkage runs around $35.00.
Pulling off the transfer case handle is really tough. Pull it straight up, and it should pop up.

Another good preventative option is this shifter.

If you snap a front axle and don't have a spare remove the inner shaft, pop this in the axle to stop gear oil from leaking out, and make sure your stub shaft is still in the unit bearing.
I drove like this for 2 days on and off road during the JK Experience. Got to love 2WD low (rear only) with a locker to power through and around.

What is the reason for keeping the stub in?

I plan on getting the advanced adaptors linkage/cable when i have some spending money.

EXCELLENT upgrade, plan on doing it to mine. There are plenty of folks who have done home-brewed "permanent" fixes for the crap OEM clips, but I think I'm just going to go ahead and spend the money to get a great upgrade professionally manufactured by a quality company.

The stub keeps the unit bearing from really coming apart. You can run without the stub but the only thing that would be holding the wheel on would be a pressed together bearing.
This, I wouldn't run it for a stretch of time as it will wear out the unit bearing so fast. It could also cause the wheel to size up and break off in extreme circumstances.

Ten-four, thanks for explaining.

Probably a good idea with 37's and 3.5" backspaced rims too.

BTW Rancho, I just picked up one of your Steering Stabilizers and it is rad. Beefy and very affordable. I recommend replacing the dinky stock one for anyone with a JK.
