Greetings, Montero EP Crowd

So I am new to Montero's and EP. I have posted a couple of times and many thanks to certain gentlemen that were kind enough to pm me back info. So this is my monty's story. After many hours of pain staking research and personal experience with montero's overseas . I decided you most certainly can not get more bang for your buck with a montero. So after all this research I decided on a 99 Gen 2.5 " winter package" .. I know that I have a good base to start with. My ultimate goal is to travel to South America with the wife for 6 months. Lets see how that goes .. Then if I'm sucessful fingers crossed we can drive it into a container and pick it up a month later in a far off place.

ODometer reads 166,000 .. This Montero was a 2 owner Cali rig most of its life until it came to Oregon . So when I bought this rig the previous owner while trying to be slick put heavy weight oil in to slow an oil leak.. First thing I thought valve covers .. DONE.. Went to Crater Lake National PARK to snow shoe . Come back to the montero and its a puddle underneath .. Limp it back home .. Call my mobile mechanic because Im baffled and dont know mechanicals quite yet .. So much oil was hard to tell .. Get it cleaned up and found what was causing the crank seal to leak. The crank pully was installed wrong when someone did a timing belt and sheared a pin and various other things causing the seal to leak. Replaced the cats. It throws no codes .. However the not so good people down at the DEQ in NE Portland said it smoked. Kinda not really .. What to do ?? .. I'm new to Oregon after many many years overseas working for my Uncle Sam. So I don't have the friends or contacts to register this thing in the country.. Dont want to keep dumping money in this thing and not be able to pass deq.. Can register it a few states a way at my parents place and keep it here .. Not exactly kosher .....

If you read this far it would be great if Oregon guys to get intouch and pass there local knowledge and wisdom on .. IF anyone has a tried and true extened maintance plan they would car to pass along that would be great ....

Thanks Gentlemen ,

department of eviromental quality, or something like that. its much like a CA smog check.

Did the montero make it far enough to get an actual readout of the emissions? or was it smoking and they wouldn't continue with the test? if you have a readout of the emissions it would be helpful in diagnosing the problem.

Valve seals have been known to go bad on the 3.5, its possible that yours are bad and allowing excessive oil into the combustion chamber, although you probably would have noticed smoke on start up, or revving.

Mike ,

Thanks for the reply .. No they hooked the thing up to the there little laptop and it did not throw any codes. Then they got in the thing and took it to 2500-3000 grand and they say it smoked.. I was standing in view of the emissions guy and did not really see any smoke coming out the pipe that was noticeable.. I did the valve covers first week after the thing was purchased. At start up there is no smoke and when you take it to three grand you really cant tell if smoking.. So I know lots of guys use a bit of sea foam and try to kick out the nasty deposits. Thats whats going on ... Just want to pass DEQ so I can get to work on the lift and some other things like ripping out the carpet.. If I CAN'T thing to pass DEQ it will sit until I find another motor .. DIESEL in the works I think and I found a guy that will do the conversion and has experience making all the JDM lefty bits work for a right hand drive montero.. Sugestions comments ???

Thanks ,

Hey Marshall! Glad you put up a picture, you have one nice rig my friend. Those valve seals should probably do the trick and the seafoam couldn't hurt either. Some more guys should post up soon for more technical support.

Monterorider,

When I took it to the DEQ it was pretty nice out .. I however only ran the truck for like 30-40 minutes before the deq.. Maybe I should drive to Vancouver and back before the DEQ ? Like I said its not throwing code and they just failed me on that so so smoke.. Almost wondering if I should take to a differnt DEQ this time around... Thanks for all the replys.. Any suggestions on where and how much Sea Foam to use .. Many opinions and ways to do this ...

Suggestions on lifts ???

Thanks Gentlemen ,
Marshall

Scrubber3,

The valve seals were I thought the leaks were coming from to begin with and replaced straight away .. The we found out it was the crank seal .. Both repaired and I have no leaks .. Cats were also replaced.. No codes ... Enjoys that nice weather out east...

The actual valve guide seals are different from the valve cover gasket. these are internal and are what let the oil into the combustion chamber thereby producing the smoke. You won't see an oil leak with these rather just the bit of smoke through the tailpipe.

What you'll see is increased oil usage but no leaks.

Happens with all mitsu v6 engines from Gen I & II but unsure about gen III.

Fix is to replace it using either the LP Air or Rope Trick. Of course you can also remove the heads and remove the valves but it's a lot quicker & cheaper to just just do either the LP Air / Rope trick. Usually the v6's don't have valve problems requiring head removal but if you're unsure, ask the shop to inspect the valves using those special inspection cameras they can insert into the spark plug holes.

HTH.

I think that I need to ask the Wifes master mechanics father to get me mitsu nomenclature so I can see diagrams.. You know us Navy IDC's maybe are not as smart as you 18d types.. LOL ..

What's an 18d type? I was a Data Systems Tech which was rolled into the FC or ET rates.

Sounds like my Navy corpsman buddy who was detached to a Marine Recon unit.

FWIW, though we did the same thing... fixed broken stuff. Me computers. You, guys like me LOL.
