HI LIFT AS A WINCH?

Umm, what kind of terrible driver would roll their car in a field like that? To drive like that you'd have to be really unsafe, with all those people around.

Plus, speaking of all the people watching, why not just have them pull the car back over without use of the hi-lift? That would have been quicker and safer.

Sorry, I couldn't stop myself :D

you'd be amazed what stupid **** people do...

Yes they are low but the one we were using is rated to about 4.5k lbs WLL. Test rating is about 7k from memory. Shear pin is likely to go after that. That truck weighs about 5500lbs so we were well within the rating just tipping it back over. Not sure I would like to be trying to get it out of a deep mud pit or up a 60 degree slope though.

Glad you enjoyed it Dave. We wanted to show that it can be done but also that it isn't something you want to try 1st if you have options. Frank sweating on the handle and suggesting a winch is the 1st 3 things you should fit to your truck hopefully demonstrated that? :sombrero:

The other thing we wanted to show was that a high-lift and/or a winch alone are useless without additional equipment and the knowledge on how to properly rig and use them.

In the high-lift pull for example there were 6 shackles, 2 x 50' synthetic winch extensions, a 10' welded link choke chain, 2 x rope bungs (a stick and a magazine) as well as the high-lift itself with pulling adaptor.

In the 3 point self-recover pull with the winch we did just before the hi-lift we had 5 shackles, 1 x 50' synthetic winch extension, 2 x snatch blocks and 2 x anchor points (My 90 and the X-Anchor in the demo). If using different anchor points such as buried tires, trees or rocks then additional straps and shackles would be needed.

Hope it was helpful.

Ian

Anyone have a video of this demo?

I'm working on it...we were too busy with the demo to shoot it, so I'm contacting folks who were there to get a copy of what they got...

Just go to Ian's place in the middle of the night and tip one of his trucks on its side and film his recovery in the AM.

No need to travel or lose the sleep. That was one of my trucks we tipped in the demo.... :sombrero:

It is/was a 96 SD, 5spd with cloth seats and no sunroofs in 'Expo' White as well!! :Wow1:

You must have installed a new winch and battery on the Disco to do the demonstration on the three point self-rescue using the land anchor.

The Disco wasn't/isn't quite the junker you'd think. Some of the interior parts are gone but if we'd put an under hood fuse box, exhaust Y-Pipe, a couple of cooling parts, fluids and some gas in it we could have driven it on and off the field. Would have made a few noises as the trans is toast but it drives.

All the rolling didn't really do much to it. A slight crease in the roof from a strap, front fender pushed in slightly and some minor dents in the doors was about it other than a very crushed side mirror. No broken window glass or anything. Would have been different if we'd done it in a rocky or uneven area such as in a real rollover of course but in the grass field it came out of it quite well.

We drained it of all fluids before so as to avoid making a mess we'd have to clean up so driving it on and off was dropped as an option. Winch mount was temporarily welded and bolted to the frame rails and the bumper, grille, lights, etc. removed to do so. New cheap disposable battery was fitted and direct wired to the winch because of the missing fuse box.

Here are some pics from a real (unplanned) rollover. That’s actually the same D1 that is being used to pull the truck over in the demo (karma eh?). A bit worse for wear but it drove home. Most rollovers on the trail (at least here in the SW) are very slow and do little more than panel and glass damage like this. Most injuries come from occupants not wearing their belt and being thrown around or being hit by unsecured contents in the vehicle flying around.
