Intro for me and my WJ

Hi guys,

I've been lurking here for a while, and am constantly amazed and excited by all the activity and enthusiasm around this site. I've been a member of other 4x4/jeep forums for quite some time, but my interests have shifted somewhat from hardcore 4-wheeling to exploration and an appreciation of the natural surroundings. I decided to introduce myself and become a more active part of this neat website.

About me: I'm a geologist in Northern California, and I don't get away from urban sprawl nearly enough. Because of my work, I am outside 90% of the time, which I love, but I haven't been camping once this year, but this site has me inspired to find the time. I love earth science, and I especially love the desert. I've always loved cars, and camping/jeeping seems like a great marriage of my love for cars and my interest in land forms and different types of terrain and geology.

My Jeep: I drive a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited, which I bought in January 2011. The jeep is equipped with factory tow package, skid plates, tow hooks, the 4.7 V8 and Quadradrive with varilock axles. I have added a 4" Zone lift kit, 285-75-16 Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires, and ditched the 17" chrome wheels in favor of 16" Timberland wheels. I also installed an Addco 1" rear swaybar to help with tail wag, which was excessive especially when changing lanes on the freeway. I've done a few minor cosmetic changes as well.

With the exception of rock sliders, I am more or less happy with the jeep as it is for now. In a perfect world, I could really outfit it with all sorts of goodies, but since it isn't a daily driver and I don't take it out all the time, I like the idea that it's more or less stock and reliable. I don't really want to get into axles, lockers, advanced suspension modifications etc. at this point.

I have owned 2 other jeeps (89 and 99 Cherokees), which I really enjoyed driving. I was looking at 4runners when shopping for my WJ, but they were twice the price, and I couldn't justify that for a weekend toy. I do appreciate the variety of rigs that are represented on this site, and I hope to go on trips with all sorts of vehicles/owners.

Anyway, here are a few pictures:

Jeep looks great! How is your limited cladding holding up to rock chips? Mine is beat all to heck.

Surely you jest...rock chips are no match for my Limited cladding! Mostly because it hasn't seen as many trails as it should have lately. Mine looks fine, but if it starts to not look fine, I'll pull out the bedliner in a can. I already used that on the rockers.

Thanks guys, I'm starting to dig the clean stock-ish rigs more in my old age than I used to. That doesn't mean I don't wish I had $42,000 to spend on upgrades though...

I am going on a trip to Slickrock Road and Owens Valley at the end of this month, and am really looking forward to it. I've been trying to do this trip for a couple years now, but it always seems to fall through. I wish I could get some sliders set up by then, but maybe next time. I'll just have to really watch my clearance.

One of these weekends, I plan to wire in an Aux input to the stereo via the CD changer, so I can use my Iphone and my XM radio. I actually like the stock Infinity stereo for what it is, and hope that the aux input mod works well.
