Hot Dogs

Here's a little bit on 10 interesting restaurant hot dogs across the US. Being from the Virginia suburbs of DC, I've eaten at Ben's Chili Bowl many times. Also, I very much like the hot dogs topped with cream cheese that are common here in Seattle.

And here is a summary of a Cook's Illustrated article searching for the best store bought hot dogs (large production volume brands, of course). I always use Hebrew National, but Nathan's are good too. In general, the kosher brands seem to be of higher quality.

Of course, your local butcher may have some very good ones, too.

Which hot dogs do you enjoy, if at all, on your adventures?

I don't take hot dogs on the trail. One of the pleasures of being on the trail is taking the time to make great food. I do like a good hot dog at a pool party or an afternoon get together and then it is Hebrew Nationals smothered in sauerkraut and chili.

Dietz and Watson markets a New York Style, all beef with natural casing that I've taken to lately. Similar to seasoning as Nathans but with a less heavy hand and less fat. I prefer my hot dogs with a little snap, and grilled. I also enjoy all of the traditional varieties, and enjoyed the article on some of the new variants.

Back when I was a hot dog eater, Applegate Farms did make a good dog.

But a casing dog. Oh, give me the snap of biting into a casing dog. The hot juices. The soft bun and chopped onion.
Ah well.

For you carnivores, if you're ever passing thru, stop by Winesburg Meats and pick some up. Real good jerky too.
And you might as well get some Trail Bologna while your here.

What an adventure!

Don't eat dogs very often, but like them with mustard and ketchup or a good spicy mustard, onions, and kraut if I do. I usually get brats from Bavaria Sausage in Wisconsin. They don't use fillers, additives, or preservatives, (except their smoked sausages), and they have a great variety. Their German Wine Kraut is awesome too. Great people to work with. They also make old fashioned casing wieners/hot dogs.

We mostly use Nathans or Hebrew National, occasionally we will use Sabrett also when on sale, and much of the time we will leave out hot dogs altogether and instead use Johnsonville Chedder Bratwursts or Smithfield Smoked Sausages with Cheese.

I get brats and sausages from my local butcher. Ever since I saw the How It's Made episode I kind of got grossed out, I just can't get passed the shot where the meat is being rolled over and it looks like prechewed bubble gum.

I have been off work since Tuesday afternoon, and grilling shiskabobs each night.
On the side I throw on Tofurkey dogs.

Actually they make vegi hot dogs too, but I like their line of big sausages for grilling better, I get both the Tofurky Italian Sausage and Tofurky Kielbasa ones.

Kind of hard to see it since it is smothered in a slice of Swiss cheese and Grey Poupon mustard :D
Mac salad, French bread, and the kabob stuff and a Henry's rootbeer wash it all down.
Tonight I am trying some Frenches mustard with brown sugar in it.

Before I went vegi back around '82, I ate tons of regular hot dogs.
After seeing how they make them, it is pretty gross :D

I'm not going to lie: I love a hot dog cooked over a campfire. Maybe it brings me back to my childhood; I don't know. However, we almost always bring 'em with us when camping.

I also love the Hebrew National dogs.

Also, having married into a German household (as in my wife is first generation), I've had all kinds of different wurst. I love weisswurst, bratwurst, Knackwurst, and a Polish Kiełbasa, too.

I highly recommend Aidell's Chicken Applewood sausages, too.

Excellent, is she coming to the Washington Rally? Have her bring extra of whatever she cooks! haha

I get really good Polish food from the grandparents over in New Jersey, the Kielbasa and Perogies they can get are amazing.
