Here's a little bit on 10 interesting restaurant hot dogs across the US. Being from the Virginia suburbs of DC, I've eaten at Ben's Chili Bowl many times. Also, I very much like the hot dogs topped with cream cheese that are common here in Seattle.
And here is a summary of a Cook's Illustrated article searching for the best store bought hot dogs (large production volume brands, of course). I always use Hebrew National, but Nathan's are good too. In general, the kosher brands seem to be of higher quality.
Of course, your local butcher may have some very good ones, too.
