Jeep Wrangler Habitat Official Release

More sleeping area than RTT, more integration into the vehicle

I was hoping for more like this....pretty darn integrated. (Otherwise, it is very similar to a RTT, well at least to me)

but maybe the most appealing is it has more exclusivity than RTT. Ownership of the habitat will be a rather small fraternity. The few that'll be rolling an AT Habitat are guaranteed 2-3 years of rock star status on ExPo and related "Overland Empire" gatherings. It's an overland aphrodisiac, board cred will spike. Face it, the price tag of a Habitat isn't that much more than a high end RTT, but the extras that couple of dollars gets you makes it a real bargain in this niche.

Sure nothing wrong with buying it because of the cool factor, I would LOVE to have an Icon FJ44....simply because it is fricken cool (to me), but the price it commands makes it grossly impractical, maybe that makes me want it even more. :ylsmoke: Maybe an Icon FJ44 outfitted with a pop-top and a kitchen...now that would be just silly moneywise...would be bloody cool though!

Some sort of lost...
It would be nice to have the option to order with an "open" layout behind the front seats. I think that would be much more versatile for most people. I like this idea, as well as modifying the roll bar (or fabbing a new one completely).

Yeah, you could definitely fab a more open style roll bar, perhaps use it has a support structure for the top as well.

I am guessing why the Habitat isn't more open...for support?

Interesting Roof on the FJ, though I actually think it's less functional than the modifications to the Habitat I plan.

On the FJ, To make it long enough to sleep up top, you'd have to have above the front seats, and probably the back seats too covered in. You would only have a small standing area.

In the habitat, you can have everything behind the front seats open, so you can stand, cook, etc, then whenever you want crawl over the hood into bed, without adding panels to anything.
Someone can also be lying over the hood reading/sleeping while someone else is cooking/whatever.

The habitat actually gives the most internal volume, bug and weather free, of any setup I've seen.

I think #4 just before OX12. The next two should be within a month after correcting some minor problem that I really don't know anything about. One problem after another....

And unfortunately it appears like another full summer without a Habitat is shaping up. Aren't you #10 right before me DK? My original reserve deposit was 4/2010 which seems like so long ago. I thought I was pretty close to the front of the line but I guess I got bumped a few back while contemplating a switch to a J30 only to reaffirm a Habitat. The latest date for me is around first of Sep so my guess is Oct and I surely hope something in 2012. This is getting a bit aggravating now.

Yep, It pretty much is a roof top tent. A nice big one that when close hardley even shows up. Is aerodynamic and very fast to set up. Has a hard roof and is not phased by the sun and weather. Can be accessed from inside the vehicle. Does not increase the footprint of the vehicle so you can camp anywhere you can park. Does not have or need any poles going to the ground, which allows you to move the vehicle with the tent fully deployed. Has plenty of room for 4 adults. Will never be taken off my jeep, unless I decide to go topless! Yea, It's just a roof top tent.

I need to update my signature. Guess a few folks gave up on AT. I am #6 now and last I was told Mario is picking my top up in about one week. But, he said that is out of his control and in the hands of John. Don't really know what problems they had, but had to toss our several parts that didn't come out right. So 5 & 6 SHOULD be one week away from going to Prescott. Then they have to be painted, assymbled etc so another week or two.
So the early September date for you should still hold, maybe late August....

Has plenty of room for 4 adults..

Depends are your definition of plenty...sure we could sleep 4 adults in our Wildernest (two up top, and two in the bed of the truck)

We don't know any 2 other adults that we are that "close" to....or want to be. LOL

Maybe if you're swingers, it could work...:ylsmoke:

Depends are your definition of plenty...

So the JKU hard top is ~60 inches wide and ~72 inches long source
A queen size bed is 60 inches wide and 80 inches long source

When you open the habitat you essentially have two queen size beds end to end.

If you sleep with the feet of both parties in the middle, your heads are 12 feet apart, and unless two people are over 6 feet tall, feet won't touch.
Sounds like plenty of room for 4 adults.

Nope, still not enough room for me....

Don't want another couple snoring and farting, among other things in "my space". No way, no how...isn't going to happen.

We don't even like sharing a camping site with other people, let alone sharing sleeping quarters.

"When you open the habitat you essentially have two queen size beds end to end."

Not a huge deal but the best I have been able to ascertain by looking and asking is the actual sleeping mattress width is 48" so more like a full size than a wider queen. And there is no place for another mattress if you did have 4 adults (or more likey kids) unless one of them deflates since the main mattress takes up that space when the unit is closed (I could be wrong about this and maybe another mattress can fit??? I'm going with a Nemo Cosmo Insulated air up arrangement with 2 units put together inside their Tuo pillowtop - I must be comfortable whist in slumber! Talking to Mario and Cam this setup should fit perfect although I'll need to rig some means to keep everything in place when closing the Habitat. Now just waiting and waiting to receive my unit!

Thanks, DK, maybe your bump to 6 makes me 7 :) Mario/John, any change in the order at this point?

So what you're saying is even if it was two king beds with 6 feet between them, you still wouldn't be happy.

It's obvious there is no product in existence that would satisfy your wants in this regard. (4 adults in one camping unit)

At that point, it's not worth you commenting on that feature of the products at all.

Even if it weren't adults, some people have kids and may wish to keep young ones close. Even for me it isn't that I would set out to have four adults up there, but just that you COULD if you needed to (flooded tent on the ground etc). Or if the weather is crap, a few people could hang out up top without an issue. Space to sit up and change, stretch, stow bags, etc is great.
I like some parts of the j30 top and it is less money. But there is such a huge difference in space. I don't think I could justify $5500 for a 4x7' tent with very little headroom.
