New to this great forum! I have a 1987 Montero, and need to replace the gas tank. Could someone please provide any leads as to where I may purchase an aftermarket unit? ....contacted several vendors online but to no avail. OEM is extremely expensive....therefore aftermarket is imminent. I would truly appreciate the assistance. Thank you in advance for any assistance with this search!

Welcome to our part of the world.

You never said why you need to replace your tank, but if it not to bad, have a radiator shop fix it for you.

I have a business down the road that rebuilds tanks from all over the world. They have some propietary system and I have used them, It works, they break it in half and sandblast and then rebuild it using the same steel as the "form" to adhear there "stuff" to, both in side and out. It is called Moyers

If you most get another tank, try car-part.com for a database of parts yards used parts inventories from throughout the US.

I appreciate all of your contributed responses!

To address Grasscat's question: I actually had a mechanic evaluate the condition and he concluded it was not salvageable.....so we decided to search for an aftermaket unit.

To address Off-roader's lead: I actually thought about purchasing a used unit but were a little skeptical about the idea out of concern in falling in the same situation with a "used" unit. I'm not sure in what condition these "used" units are going to be in given the age etc.???

Stop by a radiator shop and get their opinion. I'm sure they know a lot more about gas tank repair than the mechanic.

They may not be too bad assuming they're from a dry place outside of the rust belt. You can also ask the part yard you're buying it from about the condition of the used tank.

I have a tank pulled from an 86 Montero that is in great condition, from California, no rust or dents. I've shipped other tanks, too...across the country via USPS and other carriers. PM me if this may interest you.

Russell (rxinhed) is another good source of parts. Since he has one available, i'd buy it from him before buying anywhere else.:)
