Any Xterra's go south?

I am curious of any trip reports of Xterra's going south into SouthAmerica? I love reading trip reports, and one of a truck I plan on doing in would be awesome :).

Issues, things you liked, that sort of thing!

You can make any vehicle work honestly. And the Xterra's are very capable vehicles, you just have to be a good driver :)

I'm in the early stages of planning a trip along the PanAm highway in my 2002 Xterra.

I haven't decided if it is cost effective yet to take the X or find an alternative.

Aside from the standard timing belt, plugs, water pump, clutch and tires I also need to replace the engine mounts, manual transmission (cracked case is leaking oil due to the broken engine mount), oil pan (rusted through due to Canadian winters) and squeaky worn-out suspension (from general abuse hauling construction supplies).

The cool part is even with all these issues she still runs smooth just as long as I keep the oil topped up.

If I decide to move forward I'm going to start the work this summer and depart Spring 2014. It's not going to be a fancy build unless extra work is required to go where I want to go.

I toured Australia, including the outback, in a 1989 Subaru L-Series station wagon for a year, so I like the idea of a bare bones setup. We had 3 spare tires, 3 jerry cans and a basic tool box to keep the stock car going.

You are in Canada? Get a patrol :D

There is a huge difference for any X that is older then 2005! I do look forward to your trip report when you do head out!

Awesome! You should start a build thread for your Xterra. Never too many. I am in the halton area. Have a 2001 Xterra.

Sounds like you will have a great time! The only thing you will lack is cargo space (that is why my build on the X stopped and a different vehicle was chosen). Other than that you should be fine.

btw for myself I have to plan for 4 people.
