Edmunds.com interviewed Jeep CEO Mike Manley at the Chicago Auto Show last week. The topic of a Wrangler pickup came up (again).
Manley said the pickup is under consideration, and the right time to introduce a pickup would be when the Wrangler gets a re-design. Right now, a new Wrangler is scheduled for 2017.
Manley said the Jeep pickup would be a "lifestyle" vehicle, but one that could have commercial applications.
The biggest barrier to the pickup is lack of production facilities. The Wrangler is built in Toledo, Ohio, and the plant is operating at capacity. Demand for the Wrangler is increasing, so some expansion of the plant would be necessary just to meet demand for the two door and four door models. Add a pickup to the mix, and the plant would need further expansion.
