Land Rover Defender still dominates tran-Africa overlanding

According to Overland Live blog, Toyota Landcruiser overtook Land Rover Defender in 2011 for first time as the preferred Trans-Africa overland vehicle of choice, but Land Rover again dominated in 2012. This was based on research of all identified Trans-Africa overland trips on the African continent.

You know stuff like this just gets under the Toyota communities skin...

I'm not sure how that data could get under anyone's skin, frankly. The number of vehicles reported ranges annually from 40 to 80. The Toyota to LR ratio ranges from 40:60 to 60:40. So a swing of fewer than 5 vehicles can flip the "winner" in some years. Seems that the sample size is so small statistics don't mean much.

I have a Lexus RX350 and a Toyota Tacoma. But also a 1962 Triumph TR3. So I have an appreciation for Japanese and Olde English vehicles -- and biases for both.

Congrats to Land Rover! I dig the body style of the older ones, but I'm more of a Toyota guy. I don't really get my feathers ruffled about who's better. ;)

I guess there will be more land rovers broken down on the side of the road. But I guess it'll make homes for animals ;)

You made my point. Land Rover Defender and the Toyota Land Cruiser are both world class vehicles, but never ceases to amaze me how ruffled Toyota owners get. I've never even been in the Toyota forum, and look at the responses I get to this posting in the Land Rover forum in the first 20 minutes. Rover advocates haven't even chimed in.

You should've seen what happened when I posted about Toyota blowing three engines at Daytona. . . ;)

So you've concluded I'm not a Rover advocate? Why? Because I don't own one? That doesn't prevent me from being a fan of the marque.

Don

Not that I can tell. You just seem objective, not an advocate based on your comments. Nothing wrong with that!

"There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics." I love the propaganda (and the debates that follow)! Go Land Rover! :D

I have a theory that Toyota owners are among the most ardent secret fans of Land Rovers. . .

^^^^ This or else their section of the forum is soooo boring they have to come over here for entertainment...

I was watching and making bets with myself on how many Toyota owners would chime up here in this thread in the LR section before a rover owner did. I lost... :)

Maybe it's 'cause I'm not a Land Cruiser owner, but thiis Toyota owner doesn't make his LR fandom a secret! I do force myself to only own one British vehicle, though. If I break that rule, the next one's a 109 SII/SIIA.

The best part of the story is how both Toyota and LR owners are getting out there and doing something WITH their vehicles. It's a lot more fun than hearing about what people are doing TO their trucks.
