Gen I Engine Swap? OM617? V8?

Hi everyone, this is my first post to the ExpoPortal forums so bear with me haha. I have a 89' Montero LWB with 174,000 that I love, besides the basic faults such as non-road trip friendly seats, not-so-nice highway maners, and little power. But it is getting hard to live with 14 mpg, and no power. I have always been a fan of the mercedes OM617, owning a 300sd I know this engine is bulletproof, but so is my 3.0 in the Monty. So my best idea is to swap out the engine for a used low milage OM617 diesel or a stronger v6, or V8 to hopefully get closer to 20. Any thoughts? Ever heard of anyone doing a similar conversion? Thanks!

I dream about the om617 swap in my monty, as I have driven and fallen in love with the 2wd test truck on www.tdswaps.com, it was powerful, smooth, and best of all I personally added up the mid-30-mpg at the fuel pump. I have considered it one of two ways: 1)Convert to a OM617 with a Toyota trans/t-case/front axle, or 2) use a later Toyota 3.4 trans/tcase with the Mitsu-friendly Driver-side drop.

But wouldn't it be better to just add in the engine to the Mitsu tranny? They run at similar revolutions with speed (at least my automatic).

If there is plenty of room for the motor then you would really just need to find or have an adapter plate made for the difference in bolt patterns.

The om617 was a great engine...but claims of its fuel economy are greatly exaggerated. It's EPA ratings were 19 city, 23 highway...and you'll find averages from owners of real world (mixed city, non-hypermiling, over 55mph on the freeway) mileage to be in the high teens to low 20's.

Remember too this was in a sedan with a drag coefficient of 0.36.

A Gen2 Pajero is rated at 0.49...we can safely assume the Gen1 is probably over 0.50.

While better than the 6G72, it's a long way off from 35mpg...especially in a Montero!

Why not a big V8 with a well mated gearbox that has a nice overdrive? The stock gearing would be pretty decent if you're adapting the AW trans. You would get the same fuel economy as the om617, but triple the horsepower.

I have read most of people asking for such swapping like making swap V8 engine with V6 and most of the experts say that yes it is possible with some minor engine bay modification.
So it is possible to swap a V8 engine in your Montero, just you need to check with your mechanic to make required modification.
You can also find some more useful information about swapping your engine with online expert mechanic. The one online resource to find expert advice is www.hiperformer.com/blog page where you can easily find solution of any problem or help to make swapping engine with expert voice.
