Chunks of bearing from my D60 pic

I didn't need to see this, but Iv got something going down with my Dana 60. The transmission shop down the road said the chunk looked like part of the bearing..

I planned on switching to a D70HD if/when I found one. And wanted to run my D60FF until then but the big chunk of bearing has me worried about my colorado trip.

How do I replace the bearings?

No. I didn't notice anything out of the norm until I found the chunk on the drain plug.

Im guessing I simply remove the axles and unbolt the bearing caps and the entire diff comes out?

The pinion is tight? Have you drained this axle before? If not that chunk could have been in there for years. You can pull the axles and spin the carrier to see how its doing, look at the spiders. Remember where all the shims are if you pull the carrier out. It may be in there tight. Don't forget about the pinon bearing.

Yea double ouch because I just got out of surgery yesterday after wrestling with my stihl. Im off the oxy so I can actually do something today.

Iv got two routes I could take.. A) Search/Find the 35 spline Dana 70 HD I really want. B) replace all bearings and seals in my D60.

As far as replacing the bearings and seals.. What specialty tools do I need for the outboard bearings and seals and what tools for the diff bearings. Also, Id be real happy if I could find a good book or manual describing the process. I usually get in trouble when I wing things.

If you've never set gears in a differential, I wouldn't recommend taking on this job yourself right before a big trip.

Im on it. But a D70HD , which came out of a 99+ SRW cutaway with rear tank wont be a easy find. "On it" means my local recycler said he'd look for one for me.

After watching a few vids.. I might feel comfortable enough to build a case spreader and remove my carrier and replace the bearings.

Since Iv decided not to look for the wider 72" WMS replacement axle and remain with the 66.5", I need to decide if upgrading to a SRW D70 on my 95 E350 is worth it for towing a 8k TT. 15k lbs combined.

Did ford offer a SRW D70 in a E350 with 35 spline axles, bigger bearings? And what differences are there compared to a Dana 60 with upgraded 35 spline axles? The larger case and tubes weight rating? I think many of the D70's except the HD used the same carrier/gears and bearings the D60 did from what Iv read. ?
D70U, 70B, 70HD

Which ever Dana I decide to use, if not equipped with, will get a complete overhaul and selectable locker on 35 spline axles. Its easier using my existing equipment. If the D70 isn't far superior, I might just do up the D60.

That does NOT look like a bearing or a part of a bearing. In fact to me it looks like a magnet that someone stuck inside the drain plug. I would spray it down with a few cans of wd40 and just clean her out inside pretty good. Put a new gasket on and cover. Fill her up and drive her around for a day or so. Take the cover off and see what you find. There may be some junk you didn't spray out but I bet its just fine.

After the cover rtv cures, I will put in some napa 80/90 and run it until I either find another axle to rebuild, or rebuild this one.

That's no magnet. Its a sharp piece of shim or bearing.

I just had the rear end rebuilt $300 .. Mechanic said the chunk of metal was from the carrier bearing and good thing we caught it before more damage... Its all good now, and the D60FF should give me maybe another 100k before needing anything.. If I keep my foot out of it..

That said. I'm looking for a 96-98 dodge cummins 4x4 manual donor now.
