Installing a Volvo Electric fan on a 3.5L Montero

Did you have your shroud on with stock or clutchless fan? I'm guessing for 35's you've got body lift(how much?) so fan wouldn't line up with stock shroud anymore did you address that somehow? Did you have any shroud with 3 core?
without should it's half-useless.

The stock radiator has room for a 3rd row and adding one wouldn't affect the shroud.

As for lowering the shroud after a body lift, my understanding is, it's usually better to remount the radiator lower than try and remount the shroud. This way the radiator hoses are properly positioned. I'm not sure how this might throw off the alignment of the radiator with the radiator opening in the front clip of the body.

Have you lowered/adjusted yours? What I've seen before if memory serves me right: body lift goes in, radiator stays in place, lower shroud (all of it?) is removed so fan can clear. As result fan sucks air from below instead of through radiator. One might loose 50% or more of airflow through radiator as result. Overheating would be in order. To tally up: eurosonic, off-roader, sneakyninja observed some overheating issues. All of you have body lifts. Do you? Have you addressed radiator shroud?

I'll keep my electric fan thanks, been bulletproof reliable.
Sealed motor electric fans will outlast you truck so i'm good.

The water pump is driven by the timing belt. The fan is located on the cooling fan bracket assy which has the fan and a pulley that drives the alternator on the SOHC 12 valve engine and drives the alternator and power steering pump on the SOHC/DOHV 24 valve engines.

Weird, I have never seen a water pump driven by the timing belt, every single car I have torn apart(about 35 of them) has had a serpentine belt driven water pump.

I had the Ford Taurus electric fan on my 91. Do a Google search for Ford Taurus electric fan or the Lincoln Mark VIII there is tons of information.

Here's a link to start you off http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/show...ghlight=ford+taurus+electric+fan+tech+article
I'm looking for a Lincoln Mark VIII to replace the Volvo fan as it's to noisy. I don't know if it will fit in my 98, but we shall see.

I run the Taurus fan on both Jeeps and they work great, was going to try the Mark VIII fan but they draw A LOT of amps, still have one or two sitting in the garage if you need dimensions.

Looking for that thing i just had in my hand...
I lowered my radiator, had a 3 row made, running a shroud and my truck has 4.90's and aussie gears. I never overheated my truck but when it would go any amount above normal i'd have to rev my engine to cool it back down. BUT this is rock crawling and or 110+ degree heat. The single pass design of the OEM radiator is not a very efficient design at low rpms (low airflow)

Cool.... engine temps that is.

I have a body lift on my 02 sport so I lost the lower fan shroud. when I am out on the trails at low speeds my temperature goes up a bit, so i just hard wired my condenser fan to a switch that i can just switch on when she starts to get hot and it works great.

ive had but two issues with my electric fan
a. the wiring , if not done properly and carefully routed, can leave you with no fan, on the first hot day of summer; ask me how i know.
the second
be so careful when mounting the fan to the radiator.use a good amount of foam tape to avoid chafing of the radiator surface. all of this is obvious but i still do battle with the darn thing periodically.there are no real solid tabs to mount an electric rad on a gen 1

aother benefit is cooler a/c .
be sure your alternator is in top working order and you have a good battery. for an electric will draw amps.
mitsu provided an 85 amp, enough for the needs of the car. under heavy load the electric will tax that little alt.
