ExPo Home page and bicycle features

This is a general ping going out to the bicycle-centric members of ExPo. Are there any topics or features you would like to see pop up on the home page of Expedition Portal? Any topics you'd like to see broached? We have some industry partners that we could tap for information and content.

Would you like to read about tech stuff, trip reports, industry news, or other features?

I'd love to read more accounts of two wheel expeditions from the early days. For example, in 1890, two college students rode "safety bicycles" from London to Beijing and back, a total of 15,000 miles.

My motivation is, in part, to dispel the notion that we have to purchase the latest fancy gear to take an overnight ride. I love the latest cycling gear as much as the next guy, but I think we do prospective riders a disservice by giving the impression that you need $5000 worth of the latest hot stuff before you can cross the county line.

Both good ideas. I would love more info on bike-centric trips and trips that combine bicycling with other activities.

A primer on how to get out for a 2-3 day bikepacking trip without having to invest heavily in purpose built bikes and equipment would be interesting and helpful.

Thanks

Ah, ha. I have something for that. Stay tuned.

Awesome idea. Don't forget to check out the Budget Minded Bikepacker thread in this section. (Sticky)

I would like to see articles/trip reviews that match how many of us (maybe just my impression) wind up fitting all of this together... i.e... wheeling, camping, family..ing, and work mtb into that mix. You see some great examples of this in the british MTB mags, where they outline everything from a recent ride, such as where, contact info, maps, how to get there, etc..

For example, this coming weekend I am headed out with family in tow to camp in Pisgah National forest. We are camping near a stream (for the 3 year old to play in) in a small, unplugged campsite (for wife not be inundated with crowds ... me too) , kayaking on a local whitewater run (for the 18 year old and his buddy... me too) and it just so happens that I can ride some Pisgah National Forest awesomeness right from the campsite... (yeah, that one is for me...)

Am I mistaken that many of you are doing some of the same combo type trips? Examples like this from across the country might help inspire. trip reports, trail routes, etc... such as my last:

are likely to be in the regional section. While a trip like this might not be "front page" material, detailing a trip with more exciting mtb destinations might be.

Not sure if that is what you were looking for, but it is one of the reasons I enjoy this site so much, it encompasses such a variety of activities all built around the concept of getting away... and the folks here seem to realize that we are not all going to be able to wander across Mongolia...
